Ok, I bought another bike, a Yamaha Road Star Warrior, think big V-twin, Anyway got a good deal on it and flew up to Minnesota from Virginia, I rode 1100 miles home and really like it, it has amazing torque and more top end. Anyway it had been awhile since I had been on Speedy, took him out today, boy the Triumph felt better than ever, I like the freeer revving motor, compared to the Warrior, and I liked the lower weight, had a great ride and really was so very happy I didn't sell the Speedy to buy a second bike, Plus I liked the overall riding position of the Speedy better as well. Ok, I am on my way home, and stop for a redlight, I am fully stopped for a few seconds, just happen to glance in my mirror and see a car coming full speed, not stopping for me or the redlight. I snick it in first and manage to go about 3 feet and BAM! rams me at about 35MPH!! The bike and I fly into the intersection, I was told I somehow flipped off the bike, then it came down on me, but I somehow pushed it away. I am ok, just cuts and bruises, I will be very sore tomorrow, I am very blessed to be alive. I had a full face helmet on but no leathers, just a glo orange t-shirt. The bike is amazingly stout, there is not one scratch on the tank or motor, the rear tire blew and the wheel has a 3 inch dent in it and is cracked, the rear fender is bent up under the seat somehow, tail light and rear turn signals are MIA. turn signal bent, rear brake pedal bent, it went down on the right side. I have Progressive insurance are they any good? Please be careful out there you all, by the way driver was 74 and said he was trying to pick something of his floor! Never saw me, till the last second, said he hit the brakes, maybe my glo-orange shirt caught his attention.................

Glad to hear you made it through stunt school alive. Rear end collison avoidance was the main reason I added the Electrcal Connections tail light mod to mine but it won't do me any good if the cage driver is fishing his floor...
Sounds like your rear end took quite a hit, you should take a real hard look at the swingarm mounts and see if they got tweaked. Rest up and then go riding.

Holy crap dude! Glad you're okay. I got creamed from the rear not too long ago, but at least I was sitting in a Jeep at the time - she was on a cell phone and didn't see I'd stopped for a traffic jam...totaled her van and I got body damage. Yeah you'll be really sore tomorrow. Take it easy

Very glad you are able to post about your incident. This shows the perfect example of why one should NEVER go to neutral and NEVER stop watching their sixes at a light until the idiots have completely stopped behind. Always, always, always look for and keep that escape 'avenue' in mind! btw, not busting on ya Mark

Just today when we were out riding Wendy asked me what I was looking at when I was watching the cars behind us. I told her I always watch behind for that one person not paying attention. We got creamed in the pick up a few months ago on a highway on ramp. We had to stop because of a whole string of trucks coming down a steep hill on rt 80 and this is one of those ramps that joins the passing lane. A lady had to stop behind us and I saw a car coming about 60 or so and wasn't slowing. I told Wendy and the kids to hold on I think it's gonna hit. I couldn't get out onto the highway so I did the best I could up the shoulder without getting creamed by a truck. and sure enough the kid never stopped or even slowed. Plowed into the lady behind us and drove her into us. Thankfully we were moving so the impact to us wasn't too bad. Did damage our hitch , rear bumper, and wrinkled the frame where the hitch was attached. If I hadn't been watching behind us it would have been much much worse. I pointed that out to Wendy and told her I always watch behind me and she should too.

Glad you came through relativly unscaved. These bikes do manage to take a beating pretty well dont they?
Friend of mine owms one of them big yammies, let me ride it once you're right amazing torque, would make a great long haul hall slab cruizier, but my overall inmpression was lumbering beast.

You're really lucky that YOU are ok. The bike can be fixed. I got rear ended while in my car at a red light almost 4 years ago. I have permanent neck damage and still can't get over worrying about someone rear ending me again. I never stop watching the rear mirror at a light, especially if no one is stopped behind me.

Glad you walked away. Great job by the way. Being alert and moving forward at least reduces some of the impact.
I have been rear ended too many times, that's why I wear a bulletproof bumper on my Jeep.

Believe it or not, your moving forward at 3mph reduced the impact by about 17%! If my math is right. Glad you're okay.

So glad you are all right. My biggest fear is being rear ended on the bike. I've experienced it in a car and whiplash is F******* laughing matter.

your insurance should not be a problem ( though I would not have progressive if you paid me. ) the driver that hit you is responsible, and if he admitted searching the floor , he admitted guilt.
his insurance company should be glad you do not have large medical bills . they should be buying you a new bike.

Tough break, Mark. Sorry to hear of this! If Bryan's calculations are correct, it sure was a good thing that you at least saw that guy at the last second. 17% more could'a possibly meant something broken on you too. Phil's right, alright! Seldom is ever put your bike in neutral in this kind of situation, and always "check your sixes for those bogies out there". (I think I've been watching too many episodes of that "Dogfights" series on the History Channel lately too)

BTW, about 12 years ago, some "insurance-challeged" kid driving a old beat-up Corolla made a right turn from the left lane right next to me and totaled my brand new 3 month old '95 Triumph Sprint. I guess I must have been in his blind spot a bit to long.
Progessive Insurance WAS GREAT! I had a check for another Sprint within(as I recall) 2 weeks, and they said that they'd go after the non-insured kid, AND they gave me an additional check for $1200.00 to cover any medical bills involved with this, even though my work health coverage paid for just about everything, which turned out to be only a badly sprained left ankle due to it's being wedged between the car and my bike....MY NEW BIKE!!!
(Yep, my first immediate move after jumping up on that bum and painful ankle 5 seconds after I crashed...thanks to all that adreneline...was to exclaim..."MY NEW BIKE!!!!"

I haven't checked today but there was a slightly damaged rear fender on Ebay for $25 so far. I was watching it but if you need it go for it.

Hey y'all, this is a great forum, I appreciate the support, it does help I am in some pain, but I think I'm going to be alright, but what if there are long term problems that I don't know about, I don't want to be an ambulance chaser and take money for nothing, but should I hire an attorney or just see if I recover fine? any thoughts, I don't need the bad karma of causing drama, but I did get hurt, if it heals fine, what if it doesn't? Any Thoughts?? Again it goes against my nature to get an attorney involved......

Being rear ended on a bike is very very common. Dunno why but I suspect that most cagers look for two stop lights rather than one. It takes them a few seconds more to realise that there is a bike in between them and the vehicle in front. From what you descibe the twat driving the car wouldn't have stopped if it had been a concrete wall in front of them.
Anyway, glad you survived. Don't lose faith. Be a fatalist, if your number's up, it's up, if a cager don't kill ya something else will.
If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

I got rear ended about a month and a half ago. The cager's insurance took care of every thing. What I did was submit a claim through the driver's isurance claims department. Contacted my agent after the accident but that was the extent of their involvement. Glad your OK. Stick it to 'em if you can these dumb nuts need to be taught a lesson!

Hey Mark, definitely let the insurance companies 'do the battle'. If you are screwed physically, make them pay. If not, move on and recover costs... If you don't mind, we should let this be a lesson to others about watching your 360s. For those that have to ride 'the streets' like me, you had better watch your sixes, your twelves, your threes, and nines, and every friggin other o'clock Figure it this way, everyone out there is willing to run you over to get to that open lane or make that next phone call or that 'what motorcycle, officer?'. Watch em' boys and girls....
