Just thought I would share this event. A week ago I put on one of those brake disk locks because I was going to be gone all week. I really never do this at home, never lock my doors either, just wanted to use it because I had it. When I went out to take a long waited (yes a week is LONG waiting) ride, I forgot I had put the lock on. I rolled the bike back a little turning it around, heard a little thunk. At that time I remembered I had put the dang thing on. Keep in mind this was a very little bump on the lock. So I got the key and went to take it off, key would not unlock it and it was a little bent from that little bump. I tried for about 15 minutes to get the dang thing unlocked. When I had enough messing around with it, I got a small framing hammer and started taping on it to see if it would straighten out. About 3 medium hard taps the lock came apart and was broken. I guess the moral of this story is, if you really want to lock the brake disk just get a master lock, at least you can tap on it with a hammer and it won’t break and it WILL unlock if you forget its there and bump it against the brake.

... or use one of those stretchy bright orange cords from the lock to the clutch lever to remind you.

But what of you forget to hook up the cord? Is there something else to remind you to hook up the cord that reminds you that you put the lock on? But maybe then you would need another thing to remind you about the something else that reminds you about the cord that reminds you about the lock that you may have rememberd to attack the lock to your disc brakes?

I cured that problem... I hang my bike key on the stretchy orange cord that's hooked from the disk lock to the clutch lever... that way I can't start the bike until I remove all those things.. Or find it, whichever comes first...

I know this is going to sound kind of anal but,..... I never get back on mine without doing a "walkaround". All I am really doing is looking at the tires, chain etc. I got this 6" long bright red tab that says "REMOVE BEFORE TAKE OFF" that I hang on the disk brake lock. It's kinda hard to miss if you just look.

I don't think our bikes are heavy enough for a disc brake lock to have much of an effect. If you install it on the front disc it's a total loss, cause a skate board bungie corded to the bottom of the front wheel will easily defeat it.Maybe on the back,it would help a little. Al

If you keep the orange bungee thingie locked to the disc lock when storing it, you'll remember to hook up the orange thingie too.
