Run the first nut as far down as you can. Run the second nut on so you can see a thread or two on the 'open' end. Now run the first nut up against the second. Hold the second nut and tighten the first nut to the second. Now use the first nut to turn the stalk out.
You may have to adjust the second nut a little so that the two jam against each other properly (that is, if you turn the first nut and they both turn).
