I did a search of the archives and read the posts but still have some questions about removing the rear wheel off an America.
I've got the brake caliper off and tied up. i removed the right rear axle nut.
I figured i needed to remove the 22m left side nut, but after removing the right one, the whole thing turns. i tightened the right side nut back and the left one doesn't seem to want to budge...didn't know if maybe it's part of the axle or not.
So, do i just need to remove the right 24mm nut only?
Do i need to tap the axle out of the hub then?
Also, do the chain tensioners need to be loosened?
What am i missing?
Thanks for any help.

that's not a nut on the left side; it's the bolt head of the axle.....you need to drive the axle from the right side to remove it.....once it is out, wire brush it well, as it's (no doubt) rusted and give it a coat of grease before you reinstall it....this will make it easier to get out next time......and yes, the chain tensioners should be backed off.

Please use a plastic or rubber deadblow hammer to protect the axle end.

I jack mine up and wedge a block or something under wheel to take weight off. Axle pulls right out. Keep track of where things fall from, like spacers and brake caliper plate.

Thanks to everyone here that posted! Fast! you guys are fast!

I tried using a hammer against a block of 2x4, and also a rubber mallet. But, this axle didn't respond, so i had to use a hammer straight on...then after getting it flush i still had to pound it out by using a large bolt, then a long piece of steel rod i had lying around to get it through.

It was pretty tough, just didn't slide right out by any means.
But the threads on the axle don't look like they were damaged by the pounding.
Axle is kinda rusty here and there and real dry, so i'll definitely clean it up and put some grease on it when i re-install.

Well, you gotta learn sometime and thanks to you guys i got 'er done.

You might want to run the nut back on the axle to make sure the threads are not damaged/spread. They might look good but.... Lot easier to do it now than when it is installed. If the nut is tight going back on, get a thread chaser or die with the proper thread and chase/dress the threads.

Or a block of wood and a hammer, which is what I've been using for 5 years.

Whoops, didn't see churchkey's post mentioning that...

You may not need to, but it should make it easier.

I had that thought and checked the threads. All's well.

Just got back from the Triumph store with new Metzeler installed. Didn't think they'd get to it this late in the afternoon, so that was good. Save's me another trip.

Thanks for the good advice Greg.
