Here in SA the big thing is to take off your license plate so if you go through a speed camera they cannot trace you. The thing is the cops are now setting up roadblock and impounding these bikes and we have some very irate bike owners. Now I was wondering if this practice is just found in SA or in other countries as well. As far as I am concerned if you break the law and get caught well then you are the one to blame.

Some speed cameras are forward facing (ie: to see the driver's face). This is supposed to eliminate arguments which arise afterwards as to who was actually driving the car. Though, obviously this allows for immature riders to go through as fast as they like while flipping the bird. I certainly wouldn't condone this ..... screw it! Yeah I would and I do it too. Though disappointingly, a couple of cameras on one regular route are set at 50 but don't go off even at 70 which I think is slack of the local authority - after all, the driver of the car coming the other way might think I'm flipping HIM the bird!

Road & Track, Car & Driver used to sell a plastic cover for your plate that eliminates a clear photo.
I don't like folks who run thru red lights so I say tough luck if you get caught. (hopefully before running into me)

I hate speed cameras but I really believe every set of traffic lights should have them.
As for the film, does it actually work?
There are supposed to be a dozen old wives tales about beating the cameras - the only way is to have no plate at all, I guess!

Here it is deinitley ilegal to drive/ride anything without a plate (or temporary permit if you just bought it new). Not sure what the fine/punishment is, but I am pretty sure it is something harsh. I have not noticed any bikes out here running around with plates.
I do remember about a year ago there was an underground ring that was selling fake IDs, SSNs, passports, green cards and etc was also selling stolen licence plates.

Well here it actually works out cheaper to be fined without a plate than be caught speeding.
No Plate R500 SA
Speeding anything around R1500 SA upwards depending on your speed also straight to jail for some of the higher speeds.
BUT now that they are impounding bikes with no plates it is getting real interesting

Mythbusters did a segment on techniques for beating the cameras - nothing they tried had any effect. A friend of mine in Germany had his (car) plate mounted with a down-tilt...plainly visible from the front, but the cameras were mounted high enough that the plate was edge-on to the photo.
The real kick to the cameras was that they ran out of film in a couple days but didn't get reloaded for at least a week.

A friend of mine rides his H-D to a bike meet each Monday night. After the meet (and a few beers) he rides past the same camera and flips it the bird. Until I pointed out to him, he hadn't considered the fact that the highways dept might click it's the same guy every Monday and one week there might be a patrol car waiting for him ....

Eric, the cameras we have here in the NW (atleast in the Portland/Beaverton area) are digital cameras, so no film.

I remember seeing some kinda clear spray you can apply to your plate that when photographed distorts the letters. Not sure if it works.

Nope and neither do any of those plastic covers that are supposed to do the same thing. If you ever watch that show Mythbusters,they tried quite a few different methods and in every case you could make out the plate.

Hmmm..... Having got caught recently on a speed camera!! Yep I did, in my truck...gonna just pay it....I WAS speeding and probably more than I should've!!! The photos are clear, plate, 2 different photos of the truck as I head off, and one of my mug thru the windshield!! Yept its me!!!!  Guess I gotta watch it with my over-sized tires on the truck, makes my speedo read low!  As for the other stuff to try to avoid it in the first place... Here covering your plate with something that obscures it is illegal. The cameras only capture images when they "see" a speeder, its still not motion pictures, in digital format (I saw it flash when I got snapped), so flipping the bird wouldn't have worked probably as it was a done deal already, and they don't take pictures unless your speed sets it off. If I didn't have a plate, they wouldn't have known where to send the ticket, so I would have gotten away with the speeding violation, but would have surely been stopped somewhere along the way for not having a plate - don't know what excuse I would have used for that one....specially if it was laying in the back seat!!! I don't think they can impound vehicles for that here if the plate is valid. So watch it out there guys...... The best way to avoid these cameras and tickets is to watch your speed. The one that caught me is set for 11 over the speed limit!!! I was doing 13 over!!!

I just thought o' somethin' here!!!  On second thought, as a future taxpayer in the state of Arizona, I'm not so sure that we could afford to keep a certain possible future State Attorney General supplied with enough FLAT TIRE BEERS and not put a major hurt upon the coffers of the Grand Canyon State!!!!  (I mean afterall...honesty and contriteness only goes SO FAR, ya know!!!)

Spray light oil on it, throw enough dust on it to conceal the numbers so it looks like road grime, and never wash it ever again......
