Well in some instances I agree. I think you can have a great sounding bike without it being too loud. But the guys with the straight pipes are just out of control. My neighbors HD is so loud that just at idle I can hear it across the street three houses down with my windows closed, a/c on, watching tv and my kids typical screaming. When he leaves I can hear him for a good distance riding away, and he rides like he has his 95 year old grandma on the back.
I love the sound of a bike rumbling by and my bikes have not been exactly quiet. My SM is pretty loud when I open it up but I know I can ride down the street and not ****** anyone off. I think it is about common courtesy and maybe some small *******!

I think it will happen here as well as probably everywhere, and soon. I kept my stock exhaust just in case.

They first need to address the lunatics with the monster stereos that can be heard from blocks away, and physically be felt from seemingly the same distance away.

That was my first thought exactly but if you read the whole thing they talk about it applying to that and loud cars and trucks and everything else noisy. But they will most likely single out bikes.

Of course they will. On the east end of the island one of the towns set up a police stop just to stop the loud bikes from riding through town. Right in front of me was a chevy with an exhaust I could hear over my bike. They waved him by and stopped me. I gave them ****** about it and they stated that the stop was for loud bikes only. What kind of crap is that. Besides my bike is not that loud unless wide open. No ticket just made me go a different route.

We're an easy to pinpoint source of "noise pollution" so we'll likely be the early casualties of the dB police. Here's a chart that brings everyday noises into a better focus; makes you wonder if they'll ban noisy children as well, doesn't it? Denver's new law will be coming under more scrutiny as the year progresses as they've targeted aftermarket exhausts...effectively making Midas and Meineke "outlawed exhaust system" installers. Big box franchises retain big law firms. Once the bikers point out the Midas & Meineke consumers are cheating the law in court, that one will be "restructured". In any event, the straight loud pipe boys are going to make our world uncomfortable with their FTW attitude. Maybe the local ABATE chapters will think about stepping in before it gets out of hand.

I'll second that!!!!
And I'll third that.
I have Bubs on my America that are no where near as loud as those folks with the deafening base tones that make your chest pound whenever they get anywhere near you. I try to be respectful with my pipes, not reving them loud if in neighborhoods, etc.
If local govs. are going to address noise, then they need to address all violators, not just motorcycles. And how bout them Semi trucks! I've been next to them and couldn't even hear my bike running----DUH!

Yeah well the jerks that ride around with straight pipes will eveuntually bring heat on us all.
New London Ct police are already enforceing a new "Noise Abatement" law, cracking donwn on obnoxiously loud bikes and tuner cars. Only takes a few citezens to complain loud enough, and a few clowns to screw things up for evebody.
Just my opinion ya understand.
Glad I never sold my stock pipes, may need them somday.

I'll be putting removable baffles in my gutted stockers and adjust them as loud as I can get away with. They will have the Triumph part numbers on them so they can't tell me I am running from an aftermarket manufacturer. Hopefully they won't point out they have been modified.

After my first post I got curious so I put my dB meter 25 ft straight back from Lizzie and fired up her Long Cannons. 79dB at high idle. Don't know what she might put out at speed cause my arm's not long enough...

I didn't realise what my bike sounded like until I heard it on the NH Dyno. I guess you leave the sound behind you?

Is it better to have the freedom which allows you to do what you want or the freedom to not be annoyed? Everyone does something that annoys other people weather it's loud pipes, stereos, pets, or complaining about people exercising thier freedoms in "the land of the free." Every once in a while there are things that annoy me too, I live on the beach so all the time there's people partying when I have to be up for work in a couple of hours, or people with straight pipes cruising the beach or whatever. And once or twice the thought has crossed my mind that there should be some law... Then I remember that if I complained about other people making noise it would give my neighbors every right to complain when I leave for work on by bike at 5:30 in the morning, or when I'm working on my bike at any point in the day and need to rev my engine, or when I let my dogs out and they start barking at the neighbors dogs. "The problem with living in a free society is the fact that you have to put up with every one else's crap."
Let my dying thought be that every mile was fun and let my tombstone read,"They never made one fast enough for me."

They had a similar article in our local paper this week too. they mentioned denver's stock/oem only law and the 80db @50 ft and another city that says silence at 200 ft. never mentioned stereos or trucks. all it takes is a handful of obnoxious poeple and a handfull of complainers and the cities will crackdown. the subject of the sat setting standards so it won't be so confusing for riders to know what is legal where but that would require all the cities with ordinances to adopt the standards and first off agree. until then anything goes.

Even though mine are oem I think they'll be able to tell cause they are hacked close behind the heat shield.

There are one or two butt-brained HD riders in my hood with ridiculously loud bikes. And they're stupid enough to crack the throttle even around their own neighbors. Retards!

hey Tim, ditto what you said!!! a motorcylce rides by, he is gone in a minute. While every mornin they are doing lawn work, tree trimmin, pavement cleaning or somesuchthang at that condom complex across the street from me. i got sceptres on Millie and i swear their machines make way more noise and for a lot longer time. so who is the real criminal here??? who is really the most bothersome??? but the real question is why should i let them bother me, its a part of life (noise) i useta live 200ft from a train track, it bothered me at first but it wasnt long and i didnt hardley hear it anymore. i get a kick outa these people that move into a neighborhood near an airport and then start complaining about the noise the planes make??? if it is supposed to be a free society, then why cant we live like it??? to many people complaining about to many things!!! like they got nuthin better to do!!!!!
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Eventually, the tiny minority of riders that want to rattle windows will have an impact on us all just like non seat belt wearing accident victims eventually mandated seat belt laws. The majority is going to stick by the concept that freedom is only good as long as you don't infringe on the freedoms of your fellow citizens. Once your freedom takes away their freedom the trouble starts and the poor lawmaking begins. We're an easy target so you'd better get used to being aimed at.

Sorry..I know I'm A minority here but I agree with Roadie. The AMA says that loud pipes are the number one problem today with motorcycles and mc legislation. There is a main drag here in Tulsa called Brookside. Lots of shops and restaraunts and bars. There are few restraunts and bars that bikers like to go to. Lots of straight pipes and noise. The residential neighbors have been complaining and the cops are starting to ticket bikers if they are too loud. It's causing a little controversy. Don't get me wrong. I like the sounds of the old Triumphs and took two baffles out myself but it can get out of hand and may eventually effect us all.

Last week while riding down 400 south of Dahlonega, Ga we (LegendRyder an I) pull up along side a SUV at a stop light, LegendRyder twists her throttle (not obnoxiously) and the "gentleman" yells for us to be quiet as he is talking on his cell phone. I thought to myself "be quite so you can ride down the highway with a phone in your ear"? NO WAY; Epcos put out a bit of noise when needed.
