you can still loose with a higher bid....I Have...but it has to do with the min bid required...if your bid max falls short of the required minimum bid increase, then you will loose, even if your max bid is higher than the winning price...

Ebay says enter your bid Minimum bid 105.00 ($5.00 increments)
you max out at 109.99
you will loose to a $106.00 bid
this Minimin changes as the $ value increases so watch for it, if you're hoping to win...as I said I got nailed early on in my Ebaying...live and learn.
