Hmmmm... when you go to a live auction you do not bid an hour before and then wait. It all happens real time. Look at it like this, the seven days or whatever the seller chooses to list at is really like setting the date and time for the actual auction. You look to see when it will end and if interested you show up and bid.
There are still deals to be had. My friend was getting married and wanted to buy watches for the wedding party. He picked out some seiko kinetics that were $450 each msrp. The best deal he could find was to get the nine he needed for around $3k. I went on ebay and found new old stock of seiko kinetics that had an msrp of $485. I got the nine of them for $1300 plus shipping. He liked them more.
But at a live auction, if someone bids just before the auctioneer says sold, it resets the 'going once, going twice...' thing and lets other people bid again if they wan't. That's what I meant by my earlier post. All Ebay would have to do is put in script that caused an auction to be extended by 15 minutes or so if anybody bids in the last few minutes/seconds. Wouldn't be hard, and sellers would probably make more money on average.
For the record, I have no problem with the way Ebay works now, if I want something and don't get it, another will pop up eventually. I was just saying how Ebay could stop sniping if they wanted to.

With broadband adoption and the state of web applications these days, I don't know why they just don't have a live chat interface and conduct a real auction, live online through the browser. Of course that could be simulated with the current system using a suggestion someone else made in this thread that the auction goes until there are no more bids, just like a real auction. If there's no bid for a day (or whatever time period), the auction is declared over. I like that.

That would be OK but the auction should start after a 3 to 7 day listing period to get it visible, then instead of the auction ending it begins until no more bids.

Ya know I think that would be cool, and fun too. Isn't there a site that does live auctions?

guess if i REALLY wanted it, i would've cancelled the workshop to be next to the computer.
Or you could have just bid higher to begin with. Snipe or no snipe, you were outbid.

Perhaps not...the point of a snipe bid is it doesn't give the system enough time to log the bid AND check if it is higher than the next bid...By the system registers the bid and his higher bid is returned it's to late the auction is over...leaving his automated higher bid hanging in cyberspace

Waitaminit, are you saying it's possible to get sniped and the sniper could win with an amount lower than your maximum bid? That doesn't seem right. I always assumed that the sniper still has to best your max bid.

He is speaking of an automated bid. It is possible to win over a higher automated bid if the system doesn't have time to react.

well FJ you know what they say about assume...
the way it works is with ten seconds (ebay time) you place a higher bid, than that shown as the current high bid...the system logs your bid...then it goes to get the next high bid...but alas the auction has ended so next automated high bid never gets posted...

You can use their auto bid system, set your max to the highest price you would ever think of paying for the item. It will start by matching the current bid plus whatever the minimum increment is. If someone else bids, it will automatically up yours until your max is reached.

Not possible. Even a sniper has to beat the max bid.

a sniper has to beat the max Ebay bid but not the automated bidders seperate from Ebay. They are too slow to get in before the auction ends in the last 10 sec or less.

No Soren, the only bid I have to beat is the last registered bid...
If you have a max bid limit of $200.00 but the current REGISTERED bid is only $120.00 the next minimum bid according to EBAY is say 121.50... All I have to do is beat the 120.00 with a snipe bid of 121.50...the system doesn't have enough time to register MY bid..then go and get your counter bid...
Sorry but thats the way it works...I have been sniped pleanty of times...thats why I learned to snipe...now I usually get something if I really want it...but it HAS to be at the 10 second mark...I do it by hand and you need several windows open at one time...And NO I did not just win a low Profile seat

Not if you already have a higher registered bid in ebay. Ebay wil ALWAYS recognize the highest registered bid. That's the whole point of ebay proxy bidding. Unless you're talking about using a program outside of ebay to do your bidding...
I always thought the point of a snipe bid was to get the item cheaper by not driving the price up sooner. Not to try to confuse the system. For some reason I think the ebay sofware is a little more sophisticated than that.

no what I'm talking about is being the higest bider for a instant...
again...
the way the system works is this
the min bid is say $50.00... you decide it's worth $150.00 to you... you place your bid at the next required level $51.00 with a max cap of $150.00 ...the Ebay system registers the 51.00 bid... some one else has decided to bid also they place their bid at $52.00...with a max Cap of $100.00 they system will register his $52.00 bid..then go look to see who has the next high bid...it will bid automaticly, up to whoever has the higher max bid...he stops at $100.00 You stop at $150.00...so it will take your max and bid ONLY the ammount needed to win the bid...say $101.00 leaving $49.00 "in the wings" for the next go around... as a snipe bider I know I need to be the highest bider so I place my bid at $102.00 out bidding your $101.00 I don't know or care what your max cap ($150.00) is because if I time my bid properly the system will register my bid as the high bid ($102.00 VS $101.00) then it will go out to look for the next higest bidder YOU..your cap is $150.00...it finds you, and your bid and brings back a bid of $103.00...BUT its TO LATE..the auction has closed...and the last registered high bid is ME at $102.00

I understand what you're saying, but that's not how it works. A last second snipe bid that is not the highest bid will not win an auction. It is never registered as the highest bid because it is not the highest bid. If someone has a higher proxy bid, the system knows what amount needs to be met to beat it. I have never heard of someone losing an auction if their high bid wasn't beaten, and I think ebay would have some serious 'splainin to do if that happened.

Sorry Jaime my mistake,
You ARE correct for bid within the EBAY system the Sniped bid STILL has to be higher than your max bid as you set it up in EBAY's proxy bidder...Outside Ebay and auction "watchers" don't have the time to register...but you're right the bid still has to be higher than the EBAY proxy max bid

Yes Ian you did...I missed that post...the first time
you can still loose with a higher bid....I Have...but it has to do with the min bid required...if your bid max falls short of the required minimum bid increase, then you will loose, even if your max bid is higher than the winning price...
item is 100.00 Ebay says enter your bid Minimum bid 105.00 ($5.00 increments) you max out at 109.99 you will loose to a $106.00 bid
this Minimin changes as the $ value increases so watch for it, if you're hoping to win...as I said I got nailed early on in my Ebaying...live and learn.

If you have high speed, never place a bid until there is only 20 seconds left. I got a pair of new Speedmaster pipes for 99 cents two and a half years ago.

the point of my post originally was that i couldn't wait until the last ten seconds unless i cancelled the workshop i was administering. i sorta knew i'd be sniped but at the same time held on to all hope that i wouldn't.
i put in a bid that i figured was high enough. but never the less, the automated OR sniped OR programmed proxy bid was 2 over me at the last few seconds. i probably could have beat him if i had been at the comp watching the auction. (i have high speed). just frustrating that i didn't.
love the 15 minute rule that we talked about earlier. like you can't bid on an item in the last 15 minutes if you haven't bid before.
