Dude, you were sniped. It's a common practice. In fact, it's not like they were sitting there waiting for the last couple minutes. There are scripts that will snipe for you. And don't sweat the "beaten by $2" bit, that's probably just the minimum bid increment. He would've beat you by fifty cents if he could.
I was bidding on a black and silver tank last month and it sat at $125 for a long time. So I bid on it. I think my max bid was $175. Part of me thought it would be nice if it slipped under the radar and I got a deal. Another part of me just wanted to keep it "honest" and not let someone else get a smokin' deal.

But I didn't want it bad enough to pay $250 for it or set up a sniper script to try and snag it. I have yet to see something I wanted bad enough to game the system.
I think the only auctions I've won were ones where I was willing to spend the money and less likely to be sniped, or where I contacted the seller and made arrangements outside of the auction, or where it was a "buy it now" item and I thought the price was fair.
