Can any of you Tenn locals provide some good info on life in the area. Specifically the east or Knoxville area. I've been in the state and really liked it but mostly near the mountains like in Cherokee forest. May be moving there in the future. Been looking at real estate and found a 55 acre ranch outside Knoxville. Thanks!

kars, Not from the volunteer State myself, but just a few months ago my wife and I seriously considered a move to Chattanooga. Had a firm job offer and everything. We went down and did a lot of research too. We decided since our parents are both still with us, we will wait a bit. But that is for sure where I yam moving when I do kick the kids out and the parents are gone. It is beautiful everywhere in Tn. I just love it there. Some bad parts - sales tax is high, but no state income tax. But live near a border and shop over the state lines like the locals do. Real estate is not all that different in prices from here in upstate NY, that really surprised me. The cost of living overall is lower though. But groceries (in general) are a slight higher cost there as well. Utilities, heck I think they pay you to use electricity. I looked at electric bills with full electric houses loaded down with central air (a necessity) and they paid about 1/4 of what I pay. Lots of nuke plants along the river near Chattanooga. It's hot, it's humid. But the locals (mostly a lot of imports now though) are as nice as the day is long, even to Yankees that are relocating to their piece of heaven. My conclusion is that hindsight now tells me I wish I would have made the move and lived with the logistics after all.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

I moved to Maryville, TN (23 miles from the Dragon, and 15 miles southeast of Knoxville) from Philadelphia, PA four years ago. I love it. The weather is perfect; in the four years we've lived here we've had about 6" of snow. It is a great area for motorcycles.

Im in Cleveland, TN. About 80 miles south of Knoxville. Knoxville is a nice town, with a universtity that has a football team that everyone in the state seems to go ga ga over. Sales tax in TN is 8%. I thought that was cheap, but i rarely go shopping out of state so cant compare. The sorrounding areas are fantastic for riding. You can see the Smokies from Knoxville. BUT...it is HOT. Bloody hot, and very humid. We have had two weeks of 100 degree every day. Finally got some rain today. Come on down. The place is wonderful and full of southerners who are some of the friendliest people i have ever met.

I highly recommend the east Tennessee, north Georgia and northeast Alabama region. Great people, great riding, good seasonal weather and access to urdan areas while living the rural life. And, forget about the banjos and dulcimers, we really do have nuclear and rocket scientists in the neighborhood.

Yes indeed, Huntsville has its rocket scientist and, Oak Ridge is very near Knoxville. Im told that is where they put the nuclear warheads in the missiles.
However, just up the road from me is where they filmed Deliverance

In that case you'd better get the banjo back out...
