I think a lot of mileage has to do with how you ride. What rpms do you try to maintain, do you go up and down a lot of steep hills, do you take off from a stop at full throttle, etc, etc. I am sure there are many other factors involved. On the highway, I usually cruise between 4000 and 4500 RPM, usually shifting just before 5000 and usually not going below 3500 RPM. In town (or commuter hwy traffic), I dont shift as much, I am usually maintaining a slightly higher rpm range.
