Don't worry, Shaqueesha. There will always be somebody out there who will want to put a turbocharger on a Hayabusa, a Chevy V8 in a motorcycle frame, or a bigger bore and stoke kit on an stock 1100cc Bonneville.

If you "need it", The Aftermarket will come.

I'd have to see the tank in person to comment but, does the seat (on the Speedie) appear to be reshaped? The front of the pillion pad looks more padded, creating a more pronounced 'dip' in the riders bit. If it is, I think the tank would look better with the original seat; it would 'flow' better from front to back.

The more I see of that tank, this more I am CONVINCED that it is an ATROCITY !!!. It isnt Triumph. It should be an option, not standard. Perhaps Triumph ought to get a clue that it's legacy is prime currency in itself, to change the look on a traditional style bike is plain stupid. HD understands that the carrying on of the style is big time to the base. Offer the tank as an option, and continue to be creative on the non trad bikes, where the innovative look works.

If that's true then why did Hardley come out with the V-rod? That looks nothing like the "classic" Hardleys (at least to me).

Perhaps you could read my whole post, huh? Its pretty simple to see that the V-Rod isnt intended to be traditional, but to market to another group of buyers they had not been reaching.

That 2008 tank contains no essence of Triumph in it, it looks like a Yamaha Warrior tank thrown on, without any flow to the rest of the bike.

So it's so horribly wrong that maybe Triumph is marketing "to another group of buyers they had not been reaching"? Your words, not mine.
Your post was read in it's entirety, hence my reply.

Don't get me wrong; I love the look of my 02, but neither you nor I own the company. They do what they think is best.
Your argument though makes no sense: Harley went away from the "traditional" look with the V-rod yet you say that "HD understands that the carrying on of the style is big time to the base".
Why then did they change it if not for market share? And Triumph is wrong to do the same?
Supply and demand. That's how it works.

I can't fathom why Triumph would remotely consider changing it's traditional tank design to this new 2008 one.

IMHO the traditional tank has been one of the defining and unique characteristics of the Triumph. When people see it they immediately know what it stands for. It's part of why I bought my Speedmaster. All they need to do now is to trash the tried and true vertical engine and slap in an hd/jap like v-twin. Then what they will have is a motorcycle that will look like every other bike running up and down the road. It's a big mistake....Reminds me of that 'New Coke' decision that Cocacola never really got over. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

When they went away from the spokes on the BA I said oh no, why would they do that. Now that they stuck a sporster tank on it I really don't like it at all. Here's to 2006.

An interesting note/sidebar....

Way back when I was researching info (Jul/Aug 01), one of the things I found interesting was the reticence of the existing Triumph community to acceptance of the new Bonneville America. The vitriol posted on the TRat board concerning the new BAs was nothing short of jaw dropping! You'd have thought they shot their mom or something!

Anyhoo, some posts here lately kinda remind of then.

I think that's a VERY good analogy to bring up here, Phil. Over the years, I've personally run across many a "Triumph traditionalist" who look upon the 270 crank BAs and Speedies(and now the Scrambler) as almost an abomination of the breed. Their second argument is that Triumph shouldn't even make a cruiser at all, because "they never did before", and they'll tell ya that your BA or Speedie "looks too much like a Harley".

Hey! I say, maybe they're right!(well..only a little, of course) BUT, I know whenever I park my BA next to a bunch of T100s and Thruxtons, it's usually MY bike that gets the most attention from the general public. There's just something about the proportions of the thing that draws the eye to it. It sure drew my attention to it back in late '01.

(I'll leave you gents with the following parting thought.....

As they try to change their worlds

Not a clear and true analogy in my mind. The cruisers have maintained the ties to the classics, this "thing" loses the tie to the old and it pure stupidity.

Phil,
You have a very good point there. Even long standing traditional products are always changing especially as new technology changes. However, the long history, traditions, and success of a select nuber of brands are so ingrained into the publics eye that changing the basic design can be very detramental.

Here's an example;
One of these 911's below is a 1975 the other is a 2007. Why have most of the Porsche buyers "expected" these models to continue to look somewhat alike and have the same basic engine design?

1975

2007

Look, one can have evolution to design, but for what is considered "classic" or "tradional", certain elements must remain. For a bike, the tank is of primary ID, as is the motor. Triumph just ignored that.

OK, finally got a dealer and saw a 2008 in Black. In my opinion the tank looks worst than in pictures. Perhaps the two tone paint scheme works, but the black was not at all appealing.

The dealer had a Suzuki Blvd a few bikes down and the tank looked identical including the long flat logo (except for the name). Changing wheels, rake, bars, and seats are OK to a degree but I agree the tank defines the character of the bike especially with the P-Twin. perhaps if they come out with a V in the future the tank would look OK but then would it be TBA?.

I'm not saying a slight tank re-do is not acceptable, just not this one.

Looks like we have an extra bargaining tool at trade in time. I`ll trade my old bike with the new tank....... for the new model with my old tank. There may be a heap of 03 04 05 and 06 bikes sporting brand new tanks real soon.

Erwin - that's what I thought, mine has got the new style tank & carbies, maybe what I got is an 07 model with a New Style Tank & also the seat seems to be lower - perhaps they have run out of the 07 style tanks & have got to put the new tanks on the 07 models due to a higher than anticipated demand for the America & Speedmaster before they release the New Model with EFI.
Apart from the Tank Style the rest of the bike is identical to the 07 models.
I did like the old tank style though.

Yes, came across that view.

The main reasons for my choice in purchasing an America.
1 I wanted a British bike.
2 I wanted a Cruiser.

I have herd some of the distain that our Triumph cruisers are regarded with from others.
But to say the British never made cruisers would be not true. I cant find one now but If somebody could find a picture of a BSA G13 (1930s) and post it. Tell me thats not a cruiser.

Observe the classic 1938 Speed Twin tank from which the Triumph "tradition" evolved.

I don't know, Ed! When I think of chrome tanks I usually think of BSAs and Ariels.

Actually, before I went with the Ava Gardner joke,(I'm easily sidetracked, ya know...I saw her in my personal photos, and so I went with that instead!)...I actually was going to make a point with some photos about some design cues maybe running their course, and should just die out.

I was going to bring up the topic of those pseudo-toolbox passenger peg hangers on the BAs and Speedies that I never particularly cared for and immeditately removed from my BA about a month after I bought it back in late '01. And I know I'm not the only person around here who has had some objections about 'em too.

And to be honest...the chrome instrument cluster atop the tank on our bikes is also a bit questionable in my view, but at least they're done a whole heck of a lot better than those footpeg brackets were.

True enough. I was really thinking about the paint over chrome that the 30's Tigers and Speed Twins sported, not so much chrome showing but more like an accent to the paint and pinstripes.

that photo of an 08 Speedie is in reality beyond reproach. Seeing how its Black it simply reinforces the ides that BLACK speedmasters are the most BEYOOTIFUL of the Bonneville family.

Tank notwithstanding.

I've been toying around with the idea of chroming the tank on my '01 Bonnie and then doing a retro custom as an homage to this look:

Well Ed, sounds kind'a cool, but I hear those old girder front ends aren't too forgiving over REALLY big bumps in the road!!!

(just make sure you don't paint the parts on that chrome tank where ya wanna paint it...BLACK, 'cuz contrary to what some people will tell ya, that'll tend to slow ya down a bit)

Okay! MAYBE a "little" too much of the element Cr there, FJ!

I do kind'a like Ed's idea with a chrome tank painted on about half of it, though. That would look nice, I think.

And I still think we have a pic somewhere around here where somebody's done just that.
