Rocket bagger

That's it, uh OK
Apperantly Triumph is not interested in competing with the Wing or Beemer

Good Point, Mike. This looks more oriented towards the Electra Glide(retro) end of the touring spectrum, and not the Goldwing or BMW LT end. It might woo a few of the Ironbutts over to Triumph, but if this pic really is the only Rocket tourer that Triumph is premiering this fall, then I think they're still missing a sizeable market of those riders who would want a more "modern look" tourer.

I do like the single low mufflers on each side that allows for deeper saddlebags, though.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I like the exahust, it looks like it goes 3 in to 1 in to 2. much better than the current 2 on the left 1 on the right, I always thought that looked a bit lopsided

I'll go so far as to say they ain't interested in competing with anybody - It may be a bagger - a hard bagger at that. But, If you ain't given the option of some serious fairing - as in full hard lowers with good ventilation - It just ain't 'touring' competition. I'm not a fan of bikes with crap hangin' all over the place - But I assure you if I had the desire to buy a 'touring' bike it would have the means to keep some 'wet and cold' off my legs. Sorry Triumph - Its a losser.

I like it, BUT, its not exactly a Tourer is it. New set of pipes, a screan and a couple of panniers. Not much thought went into that.

In my eyes a full touring bike needs a full fairing, with full wind/rain protection, panniers and top box, CD/Tape players, the hole nine yars. I think Triumph missed the boat with this one, "IF" this is a photo of the new "Tourer".

Glad Triumph is not competing with goldwings. Never thought the goldwings looked like bikes(except for the older ones) Do like the looks except for that @!$%#* radiator! Would it kill them to trim it and if you had to have it a certain size make it less wide but taller!

It's gunning for the HD Road King section of the market. Heck the bags even resemble the Road King bags. My favorite Harley is the Road King, so I really like this bike.

If that is Triumph's idea of a touring cruiser.. they just don't get it! I know of a few people that really like the R3, but.. no stereo, no passenger arm rest (for their wives comfort) and no other gadgets, so they bought HD Electra Glides or Yamaha Ventures. These are guys that like to take off for a couple weeks at a time with their wives on their bikes.

Rear tire is smaller. Getting closer to a Road King with that single headlight, boxy saddlebags and roadster screen. Ugh.

Pictures of this have been posted before. I'd still rather take a Classic and add Corbin bags and a Windvest before I buy this.

I like the dual exhausts, though.

I like it a lot, I'm surprised. Love the single headlight. Windshield looks removable as well, a nice feature. Pipes also nice. I give a A-

So they took a Rocket and threw bags and a windscreen on it and called it a tourer?
Maybe Triumph could try that with the vertical twins too.

That pretty much sums it up.
But like Adey said at the Noreast last year.
Were in England do you get long distance touring like over here.
It does need a batwing or some other type of full fairing. I had never ridden a bike with a windshield before Cathy's Silverwing and now I understand what people are talking about.

That's what I've always liked about you, Jack. You ARE "The Master Of The Left-Handed Compliment" if ever was, Sir!

Actually, I think with the large single head light and the reworked single exhaust system on each side that this new Rocket will have makes it a much better looking "ugly enough to stand out in a crowd" bike.

But you're right. It's STILL no "Catherine Zeta Jones of motorcycles", my friend!

That is one ugly Road King.

I think they spend a lot of time not putting front end touring stuff on it for a reason. I think that Buick radiator is the problem. These bikes may overheat easily if you do anything to block or reduce air flow to the radiator.

That rear cylinder probably gets super hot so they need a super liquid system. You generate some heat spinning a 27lb crank shaft all day. I am sure the engineers have worked a lot on loosing that radiator configuration over the years with negative results. It probably needs that big thing just the way it is or in a traffic jamb the rear cylinder takes a dive.

Isn't the Goldwing liquid cooled? How about the BMW K1200GT/RT/LT/whatever?

Ron does kind'a bring up something I've noticed the two times I've ridden the Rocket though FJ, and that's the heat my right thigh and calf felt coming off from the three exhaust headers. I don't think overheating is neccessarily a problem for the engine itself, but if my right leg would have had a temp gauge on it, it probably would have been pushing towards the hotter end of it's needle sweep.

Transverse 4 cylinders John. They get air drawn off of them when in motion. #3 on the R3 is tucked behind two huge and hot cylinders with no ambient relief. Thats why even the CBX could function with 6 cylinders, it got some air.

I dunno, that is one very big radiator compared to a GW radiator. If it has a heat issue (I am not saying it does) lowers would change the air flow behind the radiator. This would cook the rider or #3 cylinder.

I am just thinking out loud. I am unwilling to think Triumph doesn't know how to make a touring bike. Thats just stupid thinking on their part if they can't so I am wondering if its mechanical instead.

I second that. IMHO, the Rocket is one of the 10 ugliest motorcycles ever made. The engine looks a thrid world tractor engine that has been chromed up. It's a shame becuase the bike is obviously very capable. Triumph must have hired the guy who designed the 1958 Buick, the ugliest car ever made.

Biker, I like the Rocket. It's a blast to ride but that ain't no Tourer. That's a weekender, IMHO some people are looking for a Tourer to go coast to coast and back aging If one so desires. A fairing for element protection and all the amenities and a nice comfy seat and some stability for mom's derriere is a Tourer.
I think some are disappointed if this is what Triumph calls a Tourer. Once again just my opinion
Of course these are "spy" photos we are discussing and all this talk might be a moot point

Not for me, at least not but these awkward photos. I hate the original Rocket - the twin lights, humpbacked tank and think the pipes are just trying too hard to prove it's a triple. This exercise looks like everything the orignal Rocket isn't. In fact, it looks like they "America"-nized the Rocket. I bet it sells twice what the original did. This one has me very anxiously waiting to see it in person and is the first bike since my America to get my strong interest. I didn't even know Triumph was still in business when I picked up an America brochure brought home and left in a neighbors garage. Six months later, I bought one. We'll see.

Well I think the R-III isn't the prettiest bike in the world. But it is fun to ride. At least they had a look of their own and that's why I like Triumphs for their uniqueness in a world of V-twins. This is the first time to my knowledge that Triumph has tried to copy the look of any bike, let alone a Harley. I think they should have stuck with desigining a sport tourer from the concept pictures we saw here. This new Tour R-III has no personality.

I just couldn't stand to be stuck behind plastic all the time. I learned this summer, during the really warm weeks, I like going without the windshield. That new Rocket windscreen sure looks detachable, and if so that would be a big selling point. My America windscreen is a bit of a hassle to remove/install on a moments notice and I don't care much for the massive fork mounts of the Memphis Shades system.

I've come across the desert without a screen when the temps were above 105. It was like sitting in front of a oven with a fan blowing the heat into my face. I had to take a break every chance I could. It was ******! With a full size screen with a vent I can block that heat from my face. I don't need to take as many breaks.

I know this has been hashed over again and again. But I happened to stop and look at a Valkyrie Interstate yesterday.
What a great bike. Hard bags, fairing, shaft drive and a unique engine. We can only get 1/2 of it. Why doesn't Triumph get it? Honda got it.
For shame, for shame.

This looks like something Pete would tinker together. My take on a tourer. They are one-half a gene away from a cage. The R3 will never be a tourer. Way too much power to be relegated into a mere old fart transport. Funny how tourers are in the eyes of the beholders. The phrase, "You tour on that" comes to mind quite often.
