You're right. I'm probably jumping ahead a few steps. But...

...I don't think it's too far of a leap to say he'd much rather have people buying his music than sharing it or creating it themselves in their basements. Given the extremely negative response that other artists have received when criticizing music sharing (see Metallica), he artfully steering queer, er, clear, of that issue by couching it in fluffy language about concern for people's well-being.
"Instead they sit at home and make their own records, which is sometimes OK, but it doesn't bode well for long-term artistic vision."
Sounds more blowhardy than genuine to me.
