I was just wondering if anyone had decided for several reasons they didn't like the standard long slash, shorties, or any of the other pipes offered for our speedies or americas.

I have the Tors long slash cuts and they are alright but the sound is a bit ordinary for my liking . I'm going to drill or take out a baffle or two but still, I'm not sure I will be competely happy with them anyway.

Now the thunderbike pipes have got a pretty good tone to them but members have mentioned how these pipes have issues with poor chroming etc .

So it has made me think perhaps a different approach could be available hence this post. So what I'm asking is, has anyone out there decided to go this different route and subsequently put on alternative pipes to what's normally on offer .

Just interested cos I like keeping my options open.

Thanks to anyone who has an opinion good or bad on this one .

I bought the fishtails that I have, not for the sound (which is awesome), but because I love the looks. I knew I was going to put them on eventually even before I bought my bike.

I like the JCWhitney 16" shorties, which are a lot shorter than the Triumph ones. Cheap too, about $33 each. They are a straight through muffler, no baffle.

My Bubs go on at my 600 mile service this Tuesday. I was looking for something with a "growl" but not too obnoxious at idle. I believe my Bubs will fit the bill. Worse case, my neighbours (condo devleopment) will know whenever I fire my baby up.
I was also going to consider Specialty Spares, but Dale never replied to my e-mail while I was overseas. So Bubs be the winner for now.
I can't wait for Tuesday.

Soren,
Where did you get your fishtails from, I reckon they are the best looking pipes I've seen & suit an America perfectly.

D&D Performance Enterprises, Ft. Worth, Texas. Excellent chrome. Great sound (unless you have to sneak out of a condo).

As far as looks goes, I reckon the Bubs as shown on

Jeepspot's Bub Pipes have got something that does it for me. I think maybe I might be tired of the slash cut look and this alternative is very nice.

I must say though, it is really hard to make a decision on what pipes sound the best when the examples given are of bikes running stationary whilst the throttle is blipped occasionally.

I reckon we could get a much better appreciation of a pipe's TRUE sound when it is recorded whilst the bike is taking off under load and also, as the Raask Exhaust example shows, of a bike passing the microphone when recording.

Thunderbike pipes I believe have done it right with their video, as one can really get a true perspective on what their pipes sound like.

What would be Really Good is, perhaps when you yankies get together on your annual meet and there is every pipe known to man in one spot, someone with a video camera can do this thing right once and for all so people like me who are trying to make a decision, can do so without the doubts I have at the moment. It's just an idea but from my perspective, it would help me heaps.

Regarding the fishtails, well they aren't my cup of tea but I appreciate all those that love em. Makes this whole debate on looks, sound and performance that much more interesting.

So I'll keep looking for more good info on this one and thanks you'll for your comments which are much appreicated. One final thing, I'm trying to find a sound byte on the D&D's but can't find one. Anyone got a link? cheers all

I ordered online them from Jireh Cycles. I think Wojo has the same pipes.

I've had Epco Stainless pipes http://www.epcostainless.com/ since my America was a week old, these ones; http://www.epcostainless.com/Triumphspeedster2003.jpg
They sound good, not headsplitting loud, but not quiet. And, I got a decent power gain to boot. No chrome issues ever because they are made of stainless steel.
