I realise that this subject may have been covered in the past but as a newbie I have just compared the price of a new America in the USA to the UK.

UK price = £5957 OTR ($12095)
US price = $7999 OTR (£3959)

Anybody got a spare room?

One more reason to come here and join us. You DID know that one of the several reasons we broke off from the UK way back when was the prices we had to pay as 'subjects' for certain items sent from old Blighty, didn't you?

If I recall correctly when ole blighty charged us an arm and a leg for our tea we threw it all into the ocean and started a revolutionary war. You could always throw your bikes into the ocean and take up arms against the Triumph facotry.

England = Outrageous Taxes, Low wages, Crap weather, and the place is overcrowded

You couldn't pay me to go back there. In all honesty i can only think of one thing about England that i miss.....ARSENAL. You can keep the rest. Though the the place does have some extreemily nice people.

Come to America.....the place is huge and theres loads and loads of space. No chance of overcrowding over here. The pay is bloody brilliant. taxes are rediculously low...and so is the cost of gas.

The American Dream is alive and well......and im living it

Yeah, Paul that has been talked about before. I don't understand it. Could it be the VT on your products. How does that work anyway?

The VAT tax is waived on exports. The welfare state ain't free you know.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Yep! I have an extra room for ya, Paul. In fact, I have a whole house up in the beautiful mountain town of Prescott Arizona(that's in the southwest section of the good ol' U.S.of A, of course) that pretty much sits empty most of the year, though I have to warn you that there could be a few adjustments which you'd have to deal with in order to feel "at home" in this kind of environment:

First, once you'd get your America to America(and in particular the previously mentioned SW section), you'll soon find that all the year round riding that you'd be doing in much improved weather conditions would neccessitate many more oil changes being performed to your Triumph per year, possibly negating any financial advantage in moving here.

Secondly, if you have any traces of acrophobia within your psyche, the mountain roads in this region upon which you would be constantly riding could bring any previously undiagnosed condition of this disorder to the forefront of your consciousness, which could cause you to suffer the discomfort of vertigo.

I'm not even going to bring up the cost-of-living differences (advantages) involved here.

So...it's up to you!

(though I do hear that the highly sought after U.S."Green Card" is rather hard to attain these days, there are "alternatives" available, of course....Remember: Arizona is just north of MEXICO, Dude!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

No Special Vehicle Tax either (25%)....

Just had a trip to Berlin, cost of Flight £56 ($112) PLUS tax £94 ($188) = £150 ($300)

Listen guys I appreciate the offers to come and would like to think it was easy to do so but I suspect it isn't? What could I offer America except my sparkling wit, magnetic personality and modesty?

I love my country (foolish perhaps but true)but I am shocked at the difference in the cost of living.

By the way I was told this site was addictive and it bloody is!!!!

Well I know most of the rest of this country has a great cost of living but I guess here on Long Island we are either too close to England or maybe it's because we have towns like the hamptons. High cost of living and high taxes = me leaving soon.

So do i, but every time i speak to my mum, dad and brother it amazes me the prices you guys pay for stuff. And in return, when they come over here to visit, they bring empty suitcases so they can stock on on clothes, shoes and stuff. It amazes them how cheap everything over here is. From eating out, to the price of houses.

I will never forget where im from, but i will never loose sight of where I want to be or where im better off.

I'm thinking that the main reason is the queen charging VAT for everything everytime it changes hands. Have to pay for that medical care system somehow. How is the lawyer situation there? In the US, medical facilities get sued everytime someone farts, so everyone enjoys paying an arm and leg to get a sprained thumb looked after.

To be fair to her it isn't the Queen who actually charges the VAT but I take your point.

At least we only pay US$40 more than the Brits which is saying something when you consider the bikes have to be shipped around the world to be delivered here and that we have such a small market compared to the US. There's no excuse for the UK tho when they practically just have to be wheeled out of the factory and a "for sale" sign stuck on them.

Someone ( Adey I think) asked the guide on the factory tour about the price difference. The answer was basically that they charge what each marketplace is willing to pay!

Therefore its our fault that they cost so much!!

Also our rate of pay is a lot higher than other parts of the world - including the US. If you were to take the price as a proportion of the average wage, I think it would end up the same. Ish anyway.

I agree. If you get paid in pounds and pay for things in pounds it works out about even. Things that cost 10 dollars in the US cost 10 pounds in the UK. So for someone in the US to buy a 10 pound item, yes it would cost us double but for someone in the UK, it's still just 10 pounds.

Mark,
Thanks for the real comments on The Colonies. I think we've done well here so far (for now). Of course we ruined it for the Native Americans, and my heart felt apologies go to them. They had it right when our ancestors arrived.

Gina, you are kidding right. UK pay rates higher than the US. At best UK rates are equal to the US, depending on the job, and thats at best, in most cases you would get considerably more per hour here then in the UK. And what you do get here is worth so much more.

Go into a grocery store in England with 100 Pounds and go into a grocery store here with $100. Your basket here will have a lot more stuff in it over here.

That maybe so, on somethings, but for the most part consumer goods, groceries and the general cost of living is far less here than in the UK. Plus, compare an England worker to a US worker, when they open there wage packet in the US and spend $10 they will still have $90 left. In England they would only have 50 Pounds left. Thats the diffence. The UK sales tax (VAT) is a killer. Over 20% last time i looked. What is it now. Sales tax in Tennessee is 8%
