Keep in mind that you don't want it too tight, either. You need to rotate the rear wheel to the spot where the chain is the tightest to make your measurement when you adjust the free-play. If you'll wrench the adjusters in even increments a little at a time on each side you should maintain the proper alignment. It's not rocket science and you can do it.
