I've bought a Corbin seat, but I need some help with a US/Canada relationship problem. In Canada a lot of merchants are still pricing like they did when there was a big exchange rate difference. The dollar is closer to par now, and so American prices are much cheaper. Corbin has only one person that is the exclusive supplier for all of Canada (sweet deal for him!). The dealer's price in Canada is about 25% higher than the US factory price, but I can only buy from the factory if I have a US delivery address.

This is my problem. I've ordered and paid for the seat to have shipped to Montana. I just need to send them some final information, like an address. I'm trying to sort this out, but if need be, is there someone in northern Montana that I can have the seat delivered to, and then ride down to get? (I suppose I can mail my old seat back to me from there.)

The second part of my question, does anybody know if there is any duties that need to be paid to bring a new seat back into Canada?

Thanks.

Probably not if your butt is sitting on it when you go back into Canada. And how much will they charge you to bring that old used stock seat into Canada, if you choose to do so.

i ordered a corbin seat delivered to ottawa. i had to pay pst+gst same as you would if you declared it at the border. i also had to pay some bs broker fee but it wasn't that much relative to the cost of the seat.

i have also had things shipped to a ups store just across the border and brought them across (pst, gst, gas) when the vendor just won't ship to here. ups stores charge $5 to hold a package.

Bill, did you buy it direct from Corbin? They refused to ship to a Canadian address when I was talking to them.

FedEx will hold it for free. At least they would just a year or two ago.

Steve,

You're welcome to ship it here (Thompson Falls), but I think Friarjohn (Helena) is much closer to Lethbridge. You could pm him if he doesn't see this thread.

Steve,

I had mine shipped to Phil in Florida and then he shipped it to me. Bill is correct is saying that all you will have to pay is the pst, gst and brokerage fees. I of course had to pay the extra shipping cost but it still came out cheaper than buying it from the dealer.

I'd be willing to do it again for others but I would hope someone is a more direct line (read - less shipping) to the recipient can step up.

Sometime back this site: http://www.jwmotorcycles.com/index.html was posted by a "friend of the business owner" who is a member here. I don't recall who posted and I have never done business with this guy, but he says that he can sell all Corbin products "at competitive prices."

He's in the UK so there would be extra shipping there too, but if his upfront price is indeed competitive, shipping direct from him to you might be less than from Corbin to another member and then on to you.

Did you search for any other 3rd party Corbin dealers in the US that might be able to do the same?

Thanks all for your help. I'm in the trucking industry, and know the carrier who hauls from the UPS warehouse in Sweetgrass for points in Alberta. I've had Corbin ship via UPS to this warehouse, and I'll get the seat the next day that it arrives there. I'll give the driver money for the GST, and leave him with a bit of extra.

It seems that Corbin and this Canadian distributer have come to some kind of "arrangement". The distributer has dropped all of his other lines to deal exclusively Corbin (distributer change), and Corbin won't ship to Canada. I never did check with the "approximately 7000" dealers in the US - that was a good idea. Funny that Canada only gets one.

The seat costs $450 direct, and the price quoted by the guy in Burnaby was $550. I assume that Corbin gives him a fair wholesale price, so the rest is just taking advantage of his situation. The backrest was $250, and he quoted $300. The exchange is very close now, so this is really excessive, plus GST has to be paid on the increased amount. Corbin charged me $25 for shipping, and he wanted $45 to Burnaby, plus the shipping from there to my place in Alberta.

OK, I'm done with my rant - I feel better!!!

If anybody needs help getting around this, I'll see if I can find other carriers that haul UPS into other parts of Canada.

Again, thanks for your help.
