I use a caliper to measure the slot length in the side of the chain adjuster brackets. Seems to work good and should be much more precise than a coat hanger. Got rid of most of the wobble in my front end, too.

It should take a lot longer period of misadjustment to cause a failure. I think my original belt went at about 8000, but I ran it too loose its entire life.
