Some states have special gas nozzles that have a spring loaded sleeve that forces fumes from the fuel tank back into the vehicles emission collection system. To make sure that nobody deliberately pollutes the world, the sleeve is connected to the auto shutoff system. To fill a motorcycle tank, you have to hold this sleeve back. This is one of the many reasons I no longer live in CA.
