Someone needs to (maybe someone already has) come out with a dual faceshield helmet. Kind of like you see in the movies with the jet fighter pilots. One faceshield clear and one tinted with easy one-handed swaping while riding. It would be great for those morning or evening rides when the sun is just in that spot where you feel like you need to keep taking off or put on your sunglasses.

Hello Soren I am interested in this too. Schuberth makes the C2 which is a flip face and the S1 which is not. The S1 is way expensive at around $750 for the one I looked at. It is a really quiet helmet from what I could tell. The C2 seems to be pretty back ordered and is still in the $450 range. Somewhere I read a review on the web that wasn't real high on the C2 and that kind of turned me off. There must be others that have this feature. Here is a link: http://www.schuberth-usa.com/products/c2.shtmlLater Joe

I put one of those stick-on polarized strips on the upper inch or so of my face shield. It works great for the early morning and late afternoon sun. I got it at the bike shop for about $10.

I have a Caberg Justissimo, which has a second (tinted) visor behind the clear visor. The tinted visor can be easily raised or lowered with a gloved hand, using an external lever.

Nolan has a kit, VPS, for about $75 that will retrofit any Nolan N-100 or N-100e. Helmets made after 9/04 need the VPS and a set of side plates to match your helmet. Helmets made before 9/04 need the VPS, the side plates and a new clear shield. The shield is on the outside of the clear lens and is about 1 1/2 " high. It works smoothly and is easy to flip up or down. I especially like the clear view at all times thru the lower part of the shield..especially at night when looking at the speedo/tach or other dash items.

Sounds like a great idea. My N100 pretty much sits on the shelf since I got a HJC SyMax. I put a sunblock strip on the HJC. Maybe a VPS will get the Nolan more wear time. Thanks LS

Maybe I'm thinking to much about this....a little off topic, but if they can make auto-darkening welding helmets and glasses that will turn to 'sunglasses' outside- Why don't we have auto darkening visors yet?

Well, except for riding at night, you may just have a good idea there....
The self-darkening welding helmets have drastically come down in price since they were first introduced. Maybe a bike helmet face shield of this type is in the works.

Like most of you, I have not seen a self-darkening (aka photochromatic) face sheild. However, personally I have been using an insert that covers the inside of my visor. It won't fog up, AND it darkens and lightens with the sunlight. It's made by Fog City and it's technology is called Hyper Optix. Here's a link to just one place where you can buy them: http://www.bikebits.us/productdetail_sin...;ProductID=266#Hopefully, that helps out! Jason

Thats pretty cool- cheaper than replacing a helmet. Thanks for the link. Hows it work?

Jason,
But... the most important question is... How fast does it change?
Sometimes when I am riding you can go from the sun being in your face to very dark shade quickly where you need to see fast (like going through the tunnels here).

Mine is the Shubur---- Concept, flip up. It has the polorized inside shield that has a lever on the outside. easy to flip up or down. The full face shield is independant of the inner dark. the dark one inside only comes down about 2 or three inches. the outer shield can be changed in just a couple of minutes but I understand they are very expensive, like $85. The only drawback is I've been considering some track days and they don't consider the concept a full face helment, also not Snell appv.

Hey Soren, I wanted to know that too and asked: Quote:
Can you please tell me the reaction time of your Hyper Optiks Light Reactive Anti-Fog Visor Insert? How long does it take to change from clear to dark or vice versa?
Here's their answer:
Quote:
When new, and in bright sunlight, the insert will change to it's maximum in about 4 seconds - and then about 45 seconds to go from dark to light. Performance will degrade over time, but you should have good performance for about one year of constant use....

Hey Phil,
Thanks for posting that. That sure doesnt seem very fast. Especially the time it takes to go from dark to light. If I am going through a tunnel or a larger dark area, by the time it lightens up, I could be through it. I think that going from brigher areas to darker areas, is more important to have something change faster than going from darker areas to brighter areas. I can squint for a few seconds when entering bright areas, but there isnt much you can do when entering dark areas.

I have the same Caberg as SimonR.
With this lid, you can also remove the side covers and take off the clear visor and full-face bit - leaving an open face with a drop-down smoked visor if you wish!
Side covers obviously go back on!
Not a bad lid for the money (around £130).
