The consensus that the new bonneville twins are lean from the factory, could be a myth?
A magazine here in Australia, Motorcycle Trader, has a 2005 T-100 865cc Bonneville for a long term test. This bike with 5000km on the clock, was dyno tested in standard form and quoted power was 57hp and gas analyzed as being excessively rich, no figures quoted.
Madaz(similar to Predators, Staintunes), straight-through reverse cone mufflers were fitted and bike tested @ 57hp and still rich.
Snorkel modified by cutting off the portion that fits inside the air filter element and bike tested; 63.4hp @ 7250rpm, an increase in torque and still very rich.
Snorkel removed; same torque and hp indicated as per previous test, now running lean.
Carbs re-jetted; 115 mains, 2 shims, 42.5 pilots, AI elimination kit fitted, multi-tube outlet baffle fitted to mufflers to quieten them, 16 tooth front sprocket to replace the standard 17 tooth?? item, no snorkel, bike re-tested 61.5 hp @7500rpm. Gas analiser indicated air/fuel mixture near to perfect.
Fitting the 16 tooth sprocket would have affected dyno result for this test.
Dyno tester estimated 67hp, if modified snorkel was used and eliminating the over rich jetting!!
