Episode 2 - Opinions on Triumph America

I'm nearly 100% sure its going to be the Triumph America. I found 1 that has just over 1,000 miles for $6,900 out the door. It is a demo/loaner from the dealership. I'm not sure how I feel about that but would like to look at it before I buy.

I also went to a dealer closer to my house and am wondering - what should I realistically pay for an 07' w/ the dual color?

stevieh has a nice bike there and it's already set up with accessories.
Think of the bling you could deck it out with for the extra $2100...biggest diff is it's 790cc and not 865cc, although I'm not so sure you'd really notice that on a first bike.

Oates, you have to buy that 02 for that money. It looks perfect with less than 10k on the clock. If you must have the 07 look, buy the wagon wheels and rear pegs from a stealership for another 1200. You are still ahead.

The seating will only be different as the used one has drag bars. Put the other type bars back on it you don't like them.

Also look at Sean's in Arizona. You can ship it home to your house for about $600.00 bucks.

I have on 02, it's awesome. I didn't notice a difference in seating/position at all when I sat on a new 07.

There was a thread on pricing a while back. The majority of us paid full price adn got a break on things such as accessories and those "other" charges.
IE...one dealer wanted close to $1200 per bike for delivery, assembly and some other charges. The dealer I bought from was $400 total charges on BOTH bikes I bought.
But I did pay full retail on the bikes. I think the two tone was $8199.

That's the way to go, and there is a thread back just before Father's Day on tying it down to a trailer. Everyone gave me good info because that's how I picked mine up. I know it was Father's Day because it was my gift to myself. My son bought me the helmet.

Other than the larger engine the differences between the earliest and newest Americas are almost all cosmetic. Wire wheels, sprocket cover, peg hangers etc. A well maintained earlier bike with lots of extras for a reasonable price would be my choice if I had to replace mine.


We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Get the '02. The '07 isn't faster just more expensive.

Couple other reasons to buy the 02. It's the 100th anniversary year and in 2002 Triumph had a fire and there are less 02's then any other year America.

and I came from 1200cc, 1340cc bikes to the 790cc America...790cc gives you plenty of go.

I spoke w/ Steve and he is a nice guy. I'm not so sure I will be able to swing it due to the fact that its an all cash deal. If I buy - I will probably have to finance a portion of the cost. I don't even mind the drive so much - its more of the immediate $$ thing.

cosmetic changes to the triple tree design after the '02 model year.

the 790cc motor tuned and breathing right will out run the 865, right guys? Besides, you can always drop a big bore in for less than a grand and make this point moot.

Europe and the US dealers disagree on the year designator. Europe says if it's built in 01, it's an 01. US says if it's built in 01, it's an 02.

Mine was built in August 01, Grzegorz's was probably built around that time also

In a nutshell, IIRC, in some places '02 models were sold in '01 and some people like to refer to them as '01s. Obviously most if not all vehicles are manufactured the year before they're titled. AFAIK, there were '01 standard Bonnevilles but not '01 Bonneville Americas.

I "graduated" from a red 76 to a red 2002 and gained 40 cc's in the bargain. It's all the motorcycle this itinerate child needs, it suits me

2001 as first are the best were made more carefuly and no dealer was laughing here when I'm saying 2001 coz if it was build ,sold and registered in 2001 then is 2001

Go for the '02, it looks well cared for. No problems with my used '02.

I'm in MD, not familiar with that part of WVA, must be in the South?

Just have Steve get you the VIN numbers and such,(along with a copy of registration and title) you can still borrow money from a bank for a used bike no matter where it is located - done it several times, no biggie at all.
