a lot of people try to beat the train by driving over the crossing even when the flashers, bells and gates have been activated. the thought being, they don't want to be inconvenienced by the wait, and they'll be able to make it over the crossing, before the gates(if they crossing has that added element of protection) come down and before the train gets there.
also, a lot of people don't realize just how long it takes a train to stop when it is hauling multiple cars of freight or people.
trains are loud; but you really don't hear it until it's right upon you or once it has passed you. hence the somewhat morbid term, "whispering death."
