I’m confused. We have the AUP. We have the addendum: Quote:
Topics of a political, religious, inflammatory/controversial, and/or of an intentionally disruptive or antagonistic nature are banned. All threads in any forum of this kind will be deleted. The removal of any topic/post is the decision of the moderator(s) and is not open to public discussion/debate.
Out of respect for the members of this board, the moderators, and the rules, I refrain from violating this policy.
However, it seems that some are allowed to post, and have stand the same old banal inanity that necessitated the policy in the first place, simply by linking to a letter to the editor that got printed (not “publishedâ€Â, there is a difference).
The thread has been locked. After approximately eight hours. Not deleted.
I’m posting this on the board instead of PMing, because I know the mods get overwhelmed with PMs complaining. And besides, I prefer to speak my mind up front.

I think Benny got kinda stuck into that situation. Locking it rather than deletion may have been to show how it starts to go down hill. I dunno, only Benny knows that part. When you start talking about guys like Lincoln (“We cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground,†Lincoln said. “The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.â€Â) who believed God helped the north to win the War of Northern Aggression a fight is bound to start sooner or later. Don't respond to the above paragraph!

Well.... I didn't really get stuck, I considered locking or deleting it as soon as I read the link. then the replies started, and they were nicely worded, etc. During that time I was conferring with my fellow moderators about it too, one of whom reminded me that the AUP talks about the subject matter, not just how well people talk about that subject. So I locked it and left an explanation figuring that would be the nicest thing to do. Happy to delete it if it would make you feel better Bill

OH a hijacking into a wave thread...well hows this
Top Reasons Harley Riders Don't Wave Back 14 Afraid will invalidate Warranty. 13 Leather and Studs makes it too hard to raise arm 12 Refuses to wave at anyone whose bike is already paid for. 11 Loud exhaust vibrations have disabled brain's wave reflex. 10 Loss of aerodynamics would cause gas mileage to plummet from 5mpg to only 2. 9 Raising arm into wind would cause the Harley riders cigarette to go out. 8 Afraid to let go of handlebars because they might vibrate off. 7 Rushing wind would blow the scabs off the new tattoos. 6 Angry because they just took out second mortgage to pay luxury tax on new Harley 5 Just discovered fine print in the owners manual and realized Harley is partially owned by those "Rice Burner" manufacturers. 4 Can't tell if other riders are waving or just reaching up to cover their ears like everyone else. 3 Last time a Harley rider waved back, they impaled their hand on their spiked helmet. 2 Just spent the morning combing their underarm hair. And the #1 reason Harley riders don't wave back at Goldwings: Jealous that after spend over $30 thousand dollars they STILL don't own a Goldwing!!! TOP 10 REASONS GOLDWINGERS DON'T WAVE BACK: 10 Wasn't sure if you were waving or blocking the light from his show lights. 9 Afraid he might get frostbite if he takes his hands off his heated grips 8 Arthritis and the past 400 miles have made it difficult to raise his arm 7 Reflection from his Tulsa windscreen blinded him momentarily 6 The expresso machine just finished 5 Has actually fallen asleep in his chair 4 Was in a three way conference call with his stock broker and mechanic 3 Couldn't find the "autowave back" button on the dashboard 2 Was adjusting the CD player's programmable tracks and the #1 reason Goldwing riders don't wave back: 1 They couldn't see you over the glare from the chromed dash accents! Top 10 Reasons why BMW riders never wave back 10. Arm is too sore from counting out so much cash for a 2-cylinder bike whose design is older than George Burns.. 9. Mad because Honda copied their opposed-cylinder idea (they don't wave at Subaru's either). 8. Afraid it will be misinterpreted as a Nazi salute. 7. The wind might cause the brie to run out between their fingers. 6. They are keeping their weight on the handlebars so they can do a whole 50 miles on that seat. 5. It will look bad if the paparazzi snap a photo. 4. Can't risk possible injuries that would spoil their golf game. 3. Gucci riding suits are cut way too tight. 2. Think "BMW" stands for "Bad Men Wave". AND FINALLY: 1. You haven't been properly introduced.

You decide Benny .

I did not look at the linked article. I didn't have the time as I have to spend most of my time here reading every friggin post on this board. So I guess now, I have to also look at everything, everywhere so we don't slight anyone?
So, how about we ban all links to photos, articles, web pages, newspapers, etc. Will that make you happy?

I would prefer open debate, where one has a chance to respond to the tripe that is being sneaked in under the radar.
But it's been decided that this board is not an appropriate place for that. I respect that. Some don't.
Don't misunderstand me Phil, I really appreciate the time and effort that you and the moderators put in here, and it p's me off that some are taking advantage of the fact that you do work so hard here that they use underhanded tactics to circumvent the AUP.

Would have this time. But I don't get on here until evening. It was locked by then.
I was p'd.
I thought about PMing this time, but I wanted to express my opinion openly.
Sorry, that's how I am.
In the future I will PM, but I'll reserve the option of pointing out the actions of the offender openly.

You're not alone in that. But the mods try to walk a fine line between enforcing the AUP (as amended, naturally) and not squashing things before they do indeed violate it. Even if we know from past experience that a thread is headed in that direction. Some of us are a little gunshy because the same people you referred to use the same tactics to put us on the defensive from time to time. Nobody likes to be called a nazi, and I doubt those people would say such a thing in person.
Personally I'm trying to back off. I was drafted back into the Mighty Moderator Corpsâ„¢ after quitting last year but I never promised Phil that I would actually do anything with my restored "power." That went right out the window, and when the usual asshattery commenced I allowed myself to be drawn back in. I'm endeavoring to back away again.

I don't think the original link meant to stir anything up. I think the poster assumed most agreed and it was a harmless informational link. If this board is like the rest of the populations around the world the poster should have known the opinion linked too was in the minority. Bill, you show great courage in your convictions, and you normally are spot on with your evaluations of things. I don't think it was craven, dumb maybe. In any event, I will never argue with you about your political views. It would be a boring argument when two people agree totally I am doing a Barry Goldwater write in for 2008

Hey Bill, I think you and I are very similar in that we see problems with the WAY certain topics are discussed, more than WHAT is being discussed. Like implying "if you're not with us you're against us" kinda thing. Silly. I can declare anyone non-patriotic? Of course not! It's silly. The mechanics of conversations is what sucks me in, not so much the opinions expressed.
That being said, linking to stuff outside the board, without actually SAYING anything, is a tricky thing to moderate. It's real easy for us to just skip over it like Phil said. It could have been a link to him winning a show n shine contest or something. This is something us moderators have talked about before, and we always decide to leave the AUP alone, because if we make it more specific, people find more ways around it. What is this board full of lawyers?!? (sorry dad...)

Not one to overtly participate in non-motorcycle related discussions (though I do get caught up once in awhile), I like the way bigbill thinks and if willing, humbly nominate him for moderator duties. I think he would make an excellent addition to the moderation team based on his staements here.
Please don't think I believe the current moderators aren't doing an excellent job. They do and I'm glad they're around.

I am not saying anything about anyones politics if I agree with Bill on that note or disagree has no bearing but I do agree with the way things are discussed thing as Benny said the if you aren't with us you are against us mentality instead of hearing both sides and simply sharing a view. I have my own political views and think many of them would be extremely unpopular on this board but I do read and pay cedence to other views weather I agree or not. I also understand the need to ban political and religous posts there are many who can't calmly and rationally discuss them if they disagree with another persons view.
