It was published in The Seattle Times on Saturday (I'm the guy from "Spanaway"). Anyway, take a look and see what you think. -BT
"Speedmaster" is a title not a name, - and the title is not plural.

I like it. I had a very similar one printed in the Des Moines Register (Also known as Pravda on the Prairie)
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Cool! The Lincoln quote is a nice touch.

It's a shame we can't get past the name calling and talk about a solution, all of this school yard taunting doesn't get the country anywhere. The Lincoln quote was a nice touch, too bad we haven't stopped fighting that one either.

oldroadie,
Thank you for your analysis. And as for offering a "solution," - here's mine - COMPLETE AND TOTAL VICTORY! (how's that?).
All the best,
-BT

How terribly politically incorrect of you

I totally agree, but that's an end result, not a solution. A solution is how you get there

True, but do you think victory is the goal for the “Pull Out†crowd? Until we agree on the final goal the discussion about how to get there seems rather pointless.

Uh.... it is political... But so far well said and nice, etc.
To plat devils advocate here, define victory. It is hard for some to listen to the "not till we win" argument when nobody seems to be able to define "win" with any detail. "complete and total victory" may be an end goal, but a vague description at best.

Benny, I know this is political, but since there was a decision to make the lounge political and religion free. I figure why bother having a topic that will just get locked anyway. It strikes me as rather pointless.

I'm with ya dude... I'm a little torn over this kind of thing myself. I have many opinions I tend to keep to myself in the interest of sanity But the definition of victory is one I think both sides of the equation need to think about.

Definitely seems political and a bit inflammatory. Of course I'm a left-winged coward.

I don't think it's in our nature to want to lose so, yes, I think success is still a goal all the way around. History buffs will already know that of the 9 major insurgent conflicts of the 20th century the average length of engagement was about 10 years and only one ended in victory; that would be our British brothers in Malaya and then only because the insurgency was foreign (Chinese) based. It's the understanding of this dreadful history that is spurring the rethinking of what goals we'd like to achieve, not cowardice.

Good point!! I see a lot of name calling/labelling going on out there. Seems when someone is disagreed with, they label the opposition to sound bad. (ie; "pull out" becomes "coward".)

bennybmn & oldroadie,
As I recall, the big gripe after 9/11 was that we were dragging our feet. People were impatient in exacting judgement on those that flew commercial jetliners into our buildings. The fairweather patriotism was at a fever-pitch, and even New York City progressives were clamoring for swift retribution. Why is it that, back then, I wondered whether Americans had the fortitude to see this through? Because I knew this was going to be (inherently speaking) like a long police action. So, winning this is like the police declaring final victory on crime. That would be absurd.
Our military has, in fact, been in Germany and Japan for over 60 years. In Korea for over 50. Is anyone complaining that we should get out of those places?
As a proper exterminator of various types of verminous creatures, we should stay put (in Iraq) as long as it takes.
Do any of you remember watching women & children hit the Manhattan street? Well, that is what we will get again (among other things) if we give up the fight.
With respect,
-BT

This is the fallacious portion of the argument that has me and a lot of others like me scratching our heads. As you'll recall the muderous 19 were Egyptians and Saudis, yet we are not there. We began to take proper action in Afghanistan then abandoned that to pursue the current path which led to this insurgent quagmire. It's not "fair weather patriotism" to question what the current goal since you're now declaring victory "absurd". To quote Nathan Hale, "A true Patriot's duty is to question everything." Alright, here's my question," what are we doing if winning isn't on the table?"

OK Guys I'm sorry but I have to lock it up.
I would like to thank everyone for being very well spoken in their posts so far, and no it didn't get out of hand, but it really wasn't appropriate in the first place.
I'm sorry I participated myself...
