The subject of "what did you name your bike" gets brought up once in a while. I usually post "The" as in "The Bike" or "The Speedy". My car has the same name, "The".

I just got my latest issue of Automobile magazine in the mail the other day. It is funny because Jamie Kitman has a short column about that very subject, naming your vehicles. It is kind of funny because he and think along the same lines, that you shouldn't give a vehicle a name.

Here are a couple quotes from his article:
Quote:

Naming cars is a character defect, like thinking your thirteen cats believe you're their parent

Quote:

Name, rank and serial number are all the Geneve convention requires; make, model year and generic body type do it for me.

"This is my 1963 Ford Falcon Ranchero" beats "Say hello to Brian!" every time... "Chauncy is not feeling well" is deeply unacceptable.

Its funny and good column and one I whole heartily agree with.

BTW... he does mention that owners of British vehicles are the worst offenders

I'm not big on naming vehicles, but "the bike" is named The Phantom. Just because it is.

I don't name my vehicles.

I do, however, name the drivers of other vehicles.

Well, of course Soren! That's because British vehicles have always had the most character.

(and in the Old Days that "character" was often amply supplied to 'em by the likes of Mr. Joe Lucas ...as in: "I wonder if Clive The Car or Mary The Motorcycle is feeling well enough this morning to get me all the way to work and back today?!")

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

His self described bio in an article he wrote (I extracted the pertinent sections):

A lawyer by training and manager of rock bands by day (Violent Femmes, They Might Be Giants), I moonlight as an automotive journalist.... An American history major, an armchair environmentalist... Now, my ideology places me in the lunatic fringe of car writerdom

tells me I am right on the mark calling it pretentious of him to believe naming vehicles is offensive.

I guess I just don't see the problem.

Name them if you want, don't if you don't. Certainly no big deal one way or the other. That this guy gets so worked up about it says a lot more about him than it does about those who name their vehicles, or those who don't.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Don't see a problem with naming vehicles, might be daft but who cares, nice to add a bit of human character to what essentially is machine...
Incidently, my ride was named after the mare the famous highwayman, Dick Turpin. A bit of local history, he lived up this way for a while before he was rumbled and imprisoned in York dungeons, he finally met his fate at the gallows on York racecourse...
So there you go, Black Bess, my iron horse (Don't condone what Turpin did for a living BTW! )

All my bikes have names....except the 3HW, but then I haven't riden that one yet. When I do, then the name will come. At the minute it's just 'the old one'.

Gina 03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel... 06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel... 09 America - It's very blue....

I just drank my last bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale (the one and only). Too late to go out and buy more. It's all Phils fault!! He turned me on to the stuff in Ga. and now I can't stop. Oh, and I think it is stupid to name cars, but not motorcycles or trucks.
