They probably went with the Rotax design, amongst other very valid reasons, because of its positioning flexibilty in the chassis (cylinders at 72 degrees as opposed to 90 degrees).
Aprilia did the same (specified in the design brief) on the Mille for that specific reason (60 degrees).
