My right hand gets numb from gripping the throttle after riding my America for a distance. Any suggestions on gadgets? Replacement grips? Throttle locks? Where to buy? I've looked at the Kuryakan ISO - Throttle Boss at www.cruisercustomizing.com. Anyone know anything about them?

I got one of these awhile ago and love it. I didn't know if it would work well but was very happy to find it works very well.

Got it off eBay for $16.95 including shipping

.99 Cent O-ring between the throttle housing and handgrip. Works like a charm. The Throttle Rocker ($9) is also pretty handy.

ssjones,
How do you use this O ring. Do you work it over in between the throttle body and the handgrip as you are riding or do you just leave it there for friction between the two. If so, it seems that you would just have to manually turn off your throttle. Do I have this right?

The ultimate throttle lock has got to be the BrakeAway one (also sold buy cruisercustomizing btw). Unlike most of them it looks great and is the only one that can be "turned off" by using the front brakes. It's also the most expensive.

There's also electronic cruise controls for bikes, and some people have modified car ones to suit.

I bought a Throttle Rocker for about $10 and really like it. Easy to install, works well.

Did you have to modify anything to make it work?

Another vote for the O-ring, although it is not the safest way to go. I also use a palm rest similar to the TRocker, the Cramp Buster.

Very little...instead of using the little cross over brace...I got a small peice of L shaped aluminum and screwed it to where the throttle bales screws are...on the NTBF there were a number of guys that did this...takes 15 minutes and looks near stock...

If I think about it I'll take a picture...

I have the $10 throttle rocker too. Only had it for a little while... But I like it because you can take it off easy enough for round town rides.

Another vote for the ISO grips and the throttle boss for the end like Phil and I have. I put the same ones on my GFs Honda and she just loves them too. Worth the $$ for sure. I had the same problems and put them on and it is by far the biggest help with bar vibes and hand numb on long distances. You can also add the o-ring for cruise control with these parts added on. But I tell ya, those iso grips are the feline's vocal expression.

Ed,
I got the Kury ISO Grips also, with their throttle boss. Looks great and works wonders on relieving aches and stress. Also frees your hand to keep a couple fingers on the brake. There are ISO grips on eBay to be had. Also try
BikerHaven
for real good prices on Kuryakyn stuff.

Great responses. Good to have access to this kind of valuable input. I ordered the ISO grips with the throttle boss this afternoon before Skillet mentioned Bikerhaven. The price at www.customdynamics.com is $62.90 for the combined grips and throttle boss, which looks like $2 more than Bikerhaven. I called before ordering to make sure which model to get. The technician told me to get the Universal Metric grips (1"). Thanks again to all, Ed

Ed,

Make sure they are # KA6236, like here:

---------------------------

I just looked at Custom Dynamics and the Universal are 6240. Theye might not fit...

Hi Ed,
You will probably be better off with the universals, because you will use your Triumph sleeve on the throttle grip. The slot for cable ferrules is a lot stronger than the Kuryakyn ones. When you cut the rubber grip off your Triumph sleeve (comes off easy with a utility knife), you will need to smooth out the ridges and little bumps on the plastic sleeve. When you get it where it will slide into the Kury grip, I'd suggest using some KY jelly to start it and when you have about 1" still out, apply glue and slide it the rest of the way. Be sure to leave enough space between grip and cable holder (measure befor cutting old grip off). The space is around ¼" I think.

Dennis

It could be your wheel weights...or ballance.
Mine weights (12)were all on one side of the rim, causing the front end to vibrate, if not,
have the front tire & rim ballanced to see if it's off.
My TBA was off 4 1/2 ounces (Thats a lot)

Here is the problem with using Brakeaway or Vista cruise controls. Some of the after market grips like the Kuryakin have a lip where the throttle meets the housing. You have to sand it down before installing it.

DO NOT use the Kury Universal 1" grips on your bike, they won't work! I tried them first, cut the stock grip off, sanded down the throttle body ribs, and by the time the grip is installed it squeezes the throttle body so hard that it won't snap closed when you release it. That's right, I had to twist the throttle open AND closed. The service guys at Kuryakyn were no help at all, they thought the 1" should have worked. I finally found the correct grips listed at Ma's Cycles in South Dakota (or was it north?). Anyway, the grip they have listed for the Speedmaster/America is KA6236 and this is the right one. Went together no problem. Just follow the link above posted by bonnyusa. I have the throttle boss too, and it is what you are looking for.

I went with the KA6236 and throttle boss. It installed easy and works great. I rode about an hour and a half Sunday with none of the old numbness. I have one miner problem. The throttle boss is a tad high when adjusted counter-clockwise to the end of the slots. If I take it off and rotate the slots counter-clockwise by one screw position, it is a tad low when adjusted clockwise to the end of the slots. I can adjust the cables some at the carburetor end to rotate the throttle grip. When I installed the left grip, I went to some effort to position it to exactly match the position of the throttle grip at idle position. If I do the cable adjustment to get the throttle boss positioned right, the positions of the left and right grips will be slightly off. Picky, picky. I guess the lesson learned is to get the throttle grip adjusted to where you want it before setting the left grip with glue.

I had the same problem on longer rides. My right hand would start numbing and my right thumb would ache (probably some arthritis). Anyway, I put one of the Throttle Rocker IIs on. Once I found the right placement (very easy), my problem went away totally. It cost 9.95 and you can find info at: www.throttlerocker.com. Highly recommend.

I just put the Throttle Rocker on my bike and have no complaints. The best $10.00 I've spent in many years!

I had the same problem!! Be sure that you get the KA6236 model.
Also, why not save your old grips, instead of cutting them off. Simply wedge something (like a flathead screw driver) between the grip & bar & shoots some WD-40 under the grips. In 30 seconds, you can wiggle them around & pull them off.

I tired everything to get mine off. I ended up using a razor knife. Just on the left side though, the throttle side is still intact. I still have the left side and it could actually just be glued back on without any problems. I even rode with it for a few months with the slice on the bottom, but if it got wet out it will slip a little. No more problems now though with the Kuryackkyian grips. Wasn't he the Man from UNCLE? Now on NCSI? David MacCullum, my girl friend drools everytime she sees him, he is pretty old now though, but I gues he was quite the Man's man in his yute.
