Even though Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix are considered guitar icons, I would nominate the following in their respective categories as being among the best guitarists ever to put finger to string:

Rock/Blues: Mark Knopfler

12 string: Leo Kotke

Spanish/classical: Segovia

Well as in "best rock band" I do not think you can pick the best but I will add Jeff Beck to the list.

OH NO....not the Whos the best Guitarist again.

Shame on you JB

Far to many to pick from but, Oh well, if one must. My picks are

Mark Knopfler, Bernie Marsden, Ritchie Blackmore, EC, BB King, and many many more.

One of my all time favorote players is a guy called Laurence Archer. You have probably never heard of him. He was a mate of mine back in old Blighty, we worked together at a courier company. He had one solo album released in Japan back in the 80's. Never got the breaks. Shame. He can also be hear playing on the UFO album, High Stakes and Dangerous Men, and a few other rock albums from that time. One of the best guitar players i have ever heard. Here is a couple of info links on some of his work.

http://www.kathyszaksite.com/la.html

http://leatherwarriors.at.infoseek.co.jp/LaurenceArcher/dg_e.html

Know, i think i will start a thread on Best Bass Player and Best Drummer........just because i can.

Impossible to pick a best single guitarist as there are so many contributors to the evolution of the instrument: Les Paul for developing multi-tracking, T-Bone Walker for soloing, Jimi Hendrix for turning the world upside down, George Harrison for recoding feedback (I Feel Fine), Link Wray for distortion, Townshend, Beck and Page for riffing, Duane Allman for melody, Tommy Iommi for volume...this list could go on for days...

Robin Trower, Billy Gibbons, BB King, Stevie Ray, Satriani and Johnson...

Just like the greatest band thread, so many different genres and criteria to select from. It all comes down to what each individual feels in his soul. Period.

I do have the privelege of going to the Eric Clapton Guitar Crossroads here in Chicago at the end of the month. It's a mini version of what he did in Texas a few years back but should be pretty dam impressive nevertheless. Current confirmed artist list:

Jeff Beck
Doyle Bramhall II
Eric Clapton
Robert Cray
Sheryl Crow
Vince Gill
Buddy Guy
BB King
Alison Krauss and Union Station
Sonny Landreth
Albert Lee
Los Lobos
John Mayer
John McLaughlin
Willie Nelson
Robert Randolph
Hubert Sumlin
Derek Trucks
Jimmie Vaughan
Steve Winwood

Umm, I'm thinking I might enjoy this just a little bit! (I just hope I don't have to listen to Sheryl Crow's whiny a$$ voice)

Being able to play a good sounding solo is great, but it doesnt make you the greatest... And being able to play it over and over again just means he practiced a lot.

We did this thread before. I agree Eddie VanHalen has to be up there with David Gilmore and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

But there are many others Angus Young , Eric Clapton , etc...

Wasn't old enough to remember when Jimi died (I was 3), but I remember exactly where I was when SRV died.

I don't see Les Paul's name anywhere. That's OK - he just INVENTED the electric guitar as we know it today.

He was fun while he lasted.
