Totally agree with everything you said.
There are some bands that I enjoy more live than on their albums and vice versa. Unplugged shows almost always really reveal the total talent of an artist since there is usually no fancy mixing or special effect electronics. I have heard some bands on the radio that really destroyed thier own songs doing them unplugged (it's like they are trying too hard rather than relaxing and just playing).

Well, many a Suthern' boy, if banished to a deserted island and offered just one groups music to take with him, would no doubt choose Skynyrd. A friend of mine, from Detroit, once told me that he read that Skynyrd was the Beatles of the South. I don't think that was nearly a good enough compliment. Skynyrd was much more than that. The lyrics from Van Zant were real. Rock sound, with a lot of blues and southern country feeling thrown in.
Modern bands? Don't really know any. I guess I'm one of those losers who are stuck in the 60s and 70s.

I think it is almost funny that nobody has mentioned Boston. When I was a kid, most of my friends thought they were the best most talented band ever. I guess they were so talented that they made three identical albums (exact same music, different lyrics)

I couldn't possibly pick the best band.
I do have most everything ever released by Tull, Zep, The Who and Rush.
Government Mule is a kick arse band that might be considered new but they are made up of old school rockers from back in the day.
It's good to see Tull getting some love here. I was considered a wierdo for listenening to Tull while everyone else was listening to Van Halen and AC DC.

Guess I wasn't thinking because Skynyrd is one of my all time fav bands.Ronnies brother is doing a fine job as well.

Incidently Donny, since then i have come to appreciate Maiden now. I have quite a bit of their stuff on my ipod. But at the time of seeing them i thought they were crap.

all the bands mentioned are great, but have we forgotten the band that blew led zep off the stage and sold out shey stadium faster than anyone ever the American Band...Grand Funk Railroad?? (gene simmons said they were the best) and i havent heard much mention of the Allman brothers??(the best southern rock blues) i have my favorites, of course the Beatles really got things going and most would have to admit, the greatest of all time but lets not forget where any of these would be if not for Chuck Berry!!(keith richards sez he owes all to chuck) and then what about Supertramp? there are just to many great bands of all time to list, we each have our own taste and will each come up with who they think is best. tough question to be answered by any group of people.

'Strangers in the Night' may be the best live album ever. OZ-ZY OZ-ZY! Randy Rhoads version. Only time I had to go back the next night and see it again. So I see Nickleback and Supertramp listed from north of the border but aren't The Guess Who and The Tragically Hip much better Canadian bands? (well, maybe not Supertramp)

Yeah they dont have much variety between songs or albums really, but any band that can make playing guitar as physically demanding as running a 500 mile marathon at full speed needs some recognition.

I could go either way with AC/DC.  And longevity doesn't make greatness. Wayne Newton's been around forever. Led Zeppelin.

But greatness and rock and roll need to be defined,
Greatest band would have to be the Beatles simply becase of the impast they made on society in general and the influence on other bands. I remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show, could not hear a note they played, only the screaming chicks in the audience.
But when I think rock and roll I think Buddy Holly.

Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Grand Funk, Cream, Humble Pie, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, all great. The Stones and the Beatles for kicking things off. The best Roger Waters-Pink Floyd
