OK, so i jest about the Pet Shop Boys and The Spice Girls. This is one of those unanswerable questions. Its a bit like the Red Triumphs are better then the Black ones are better than the Blue ones are better then the Pink ones. Genesis, Brilliant, but how can you compare them to the likes of Led Zep or Deep Purple. Same goes for Pink Floyd. Rock music covers so many types of music it is very hard to pick a "Best Rock Group". So many great bands have been mentioned here, but so to have many been left off. What about Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Judus Priest, Whitesnake, UFO, Sorpions, Status Quo. There are so many brilliant bands. And what do you use to gauge the Best Rock Band. Albums Sold, number of paying fans at concerts, or length of time the band has been playing. Use those guidelines and KISS are up there with the best of them, and ahead of most. Or, do you use musical ability. If so, well that knocks out the likes of KISS, AC/DC and a million over heavey rock/metal bands. Not exactly at the forfront of musical abillity are they. Who is the best Rock Band of all time is the all time unanswerable question and will be argued for the rest of time.

METALLICA granted they have been steadily going down hill since "And Justice for All". For classic rock I would have to go with Skynyrd and the Allmans. And for current odd ball band I would have to go with Drive by Truckers

Don't start me back on the Genesis conversation...
Queen - definately. Number one in the charts on the day I was born...
New bands... I'm gonna stick my head out and say INXS. Not new exactly but new lead singer and newish album. And on tour in North America. I saw them in Bristol not long back and they were fantastic!

03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel...
06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel...
09 America - It's very blue....

Mark, you are absolutley right. There has to be rules set down to decide the "best band" of all time. I vote for overall musical ability over popularity. For example Jetro Tull and Oingo Boingo. Both lead men (Ian Anderson and Danny Elfman respectively) are both absolute musical geniuses that can play any kind of instrument at anytime and play and write any kind of music at any time.
If determining the best band depended on popularity, then there is no way to pick one "best band". It would have to be spilt up between genres and eras.
One thing that is unfortunate, is that there are (were) a lot of very talented bands (in all genres) that put out one or maybe two awesome songs, then you nevber heard from them again for whatever reasons (not enough political pull within the music industry is the biggest, the band broke up or even they achieved their dream of making an album and moved onto something else).
Soren BTW... the black Speedies are better

Am I the only one who likes Van Halen in any of their variations? Not my fav, but worth a mention. Some of my favs - RUSH, ac/dc, queen, stones, sabbath, kiss, G-n-R, Aerosmith, skynyrd,...... And I know I'm gonna get slammed and probably banned from BA.com... but I have to say it... I think Led Zepplin is the most overplayed and over rated band of all time. Good? Yes, but Rock gods????

No, if you would have said Barry Manilow was the all time rock god, then maybe we would have to have a little chat with you
Personally I feel the same way about AC/DC. Over played, way over rated. I guess if you are going to play three chords, play them well and play them loud.

The Beatles, the Stones and Led Zepplin top the list for music sales if that counts.
Wow Foghat! Seeing them this weekend at a local music festival. Did someone say Little Feet. Next someone may mention the Good Rats

Stones IMHO are the most WAY overrated band, hands down. They have a few songs I enjoy, but not many. May have made a large influence on the rock scene but there musical talent really is questionable. Stewart, gotta WAY disagree with ya' on that zeppelin statement. They are definitely overplayed but I certainly don't think overrated. Ain't music great! Takes all kinds to turn on all kinds. Gotta love it. The genre issue is definitely a huge issue when dealing with the great band ever. Geez, the list can go on ad nauseum. That being said: The Who FREAKING ROCKS! (Rush at a close second). Now lets talk guitarists.

Oh yes, there are so many bands who have had one or two great albums ands then have gone away never to be heard of again. And to take that further, think of the number of really talented mucisians who have never made an record simply because they were not at the right place at the right time.

The absolute best band of all time, without question, the hands down, no contest winner... The Doors.
Followed by (from various genres and order may be debatable) based on overal musical talent, not necessarily favorite bands, but I do like all of these: 2. X (when Ray Manzarek produced them) 3. Bow Wow Wow 4. Bauhaus 5. Love and Rockets 6. Blondie 7. Jethro Tull 8. Oingo Boingo 9. Yello 10. Agent Orange
I have to be honest and not include some of my favorite punk bands as best ever bands, great stuff but not fully rounded out talent. Even the Ramones (as awesome as they were) were three chord wonders, not complete musicians.
I debated on adding Boston to the list, but when you make three identical albums, that kinda eliminates you from a best ever list (should have made one album and called it a day).
Soren
You forgot Fugazi. Agent Orange ruled. Zebrahead, Motorhead, Stones circa 72-73, UFO lights Out, AC/DC with Bonn Scott, anything live from the the Who, Black Sabbath, Leslie West, oh...and Barbara Streisand NOT!!!

Ah yes, Fugazi! Minor Threat reincarnated. Awesome bands, but not the absolute best of all time. However, my punk list would read a little bit tlike this (atleast right now anyway): D.R.I. Circle Jerks Minor Threat Fear Anti-Nowhere League Angry Samonans MDC The Vandals The Dead Milkmen Adrenolin O.D. The Dammed Buzzcocks 7 Seconds
And a few more...

Soren, You misdirected Bahstard("Forumla51"reference) Led Zepplin was great. but where are they now? I also love the ZEP, but there is nothing in recent years to support their stance as a super band. C'Mon, folks - can you really name a group that has produced as much as AC/DC has in the last 25 years? BTW - Moving Pictures was one of my faves as well...
Gotta agree with bigbill again. 25 years of music is great, and I rock out to ACDC EVERY time I hear them on the radio, but thats it, they rock, nothing else. Zeppelin did a LOT and ANY interview you hear with ANY rock band since the early 70s talks about them as an influence.
As to where are they now, well... They all still play, nust not together. Check out Page and Plant Unledded sometime.

It is amazing how some of the most musicly talented bands are not some of the most popular bands. Logic would say otherwise, but in reality it seems to be the opposite. Most of the most popular stuff out there is the most simple music (unfortunately it is them promoted as great music)

Agreed with the Almans! Amazing musicians. Saw the Truckers open for the Black Crowes (AWESOME crowes concert by the way) and they sucked. Reminded me too much of Guster which I was forces to go see in college cause the girl I dated wanted to. She was hot, they sucked. It's like paint by numbers... Song 4, form C, go. Ok, next. BORING!

I think you are right. But I actually think Zepp is under-appreciated by the average listener. If you are a blues fan, it is just amazing what you can hear come thru Zepp. Their musicality was lost with your average Joe I think...
Personally I think Pink Floyd is way overrated...

Soren, I think you and I are on the same page about the musical talent portion here. Zepp was interesting cause some people criticize Page for not playing that well. Technically his playing wasn't that reproducible. Like he didn't always play all the licks spot on every time. But hey, who says you have to?!? Problem is, most concert goers want to hear THE song THE SAME way it is on the album. You'll never hear that at a blues show... And thats why they didn't do it the same every time. Personally I love alternate takes on songs. One reason why I'll watch any "unplugged" concert, even bands I don't normally like. Puts their music in perspective, ya know?

I am a Pink Floyd nut but i think you have to be in a certain mood to enjoy there unique style.... Funny story though. Six years ago my family and i were driving through Salisbury and my youngest who was about 10, was sick in the car. My good lady cleaned him up whilst i rushed to buy him a new shirt from the shop. On the way back i ran past a music shop with a bargin bucket of CD's outside. I noticed a Back in Black CD which i quickly purchased, i couldn't resist it as it was about 15 years since i last heard it. Our kids were stunned as they both witnessed there parents head banging in the front of the car re-living there youth.....Both of my lads now love AC/DC. Bon Scott, what a legand.

I agree.
I would add that the stuff Page wrote was amazing, if one looks through the whole repertoire (and not only the popular stuff).
I also think their live performances were tops (check out the Song Remains The Same movie) - well coordinated musicians too ... technically speaking.
