No, it's wet but according to the Haynes manual, you can take the cover off and not lose all the oil. Below is the info from that manual. I plan on having a piece of plastic sheeting draped/taped over the frame to force any oil into a catch basin for two reasons. I don't want to lose the oil and I don't want to make a mess!

I cracked the alternator cover and (just guessing) dropped about 1/2 to 1 cup of oil on the floor. Surprise! I didn't know it was going to be wet. I also reused the gasket and didn't have any leaks, but I think I just got lucky.

Has anyone noticed a correlation between fried igniter units and heat? I lost mine when the daily temps were hitting up around 105dF. BTW, I had about 20k on my bike at the time.

It was 90 when mine went on saturday and about 80 when my other went in May. I wouldn't call either extreme heat.

i just sent them this:
Hello,
I was wondering if there is any hope of your company producing a cdi for the America/Speedmaster series of motorcycles. They are quite similar to the Bonneville family that you already make an after market box for. Except that they have a 270 deg motor rather than a 360 deg motor. The factory boxes seem to have some quality issues and some owners are having multiple failures. There is currently no after market product available so you company would be in a good market position.
If you could please look in this product I know that I would buy one as a spare at the very least. And I'm sure many others would also. If you have any questions for the owners of the America/speedmaster family; BonnevilleAmerica.com forums would be a great place to pose them.
Thank You
Alden Dill

I think if more of us do this it can't hurt.

if you check their website, the bonneville is the only non-offroad bike they produce for. I don't know much about dirtbikes, but am guessing there probably are similarities in the timing, etc which allowed for much easier development of the Bonneville's box.

Sent my email to them this morning. Litzerski's probably correct but there's no way to know if we don't try.

We (the dealer and all of the NH rally crew) learn something interesting on saturday. My bike was in the shop again for a blown ignitor. The dealer had robbed one off an 07 to test my system. Plugged it in and nothing. They traced the entire system and nothing. They were stymied as were we. The verdict was that I need a new bike and we all tromped off to look at a Turbo Rocket. But Pat and Bill (not sure of screen name but from Ont) thought this isn't right and convinced the dealer to pull a cdi off an 05 that was on consignment. Low and behold it had spark. Turns out the 07 igntors were different. This igntor had come off a mulberry 07 that hadn't even been uncrated completely yet. This means that Triumph changed something. And didn't even tell the dealers. Interesting to say the least.

Our Triumph parts catalogue lists several different CDI's depending on year and engine serial#.

Here's their reply:
Hello there. We apologize for the delay in answering your inquiries. The engineer has been out town for a few months and has just returned earlier this week. we spoke to him and he said that will not continue the process of making the Bonneville America CDI boxes because of the fact that their are too many OEM part numbers for the stock CDI Box  to keep into account and that the CDI would not work with more than at least two models. The engines may be the same, but the CDI boxes are different. We apologize for any inconvenience.

This is ridiculous. I just called the dealer they got an igniter in early this week. They put it in and it went bad on the test ride so now they are waiting for another one. And triumph north America doesn't have one in stock. So if anyone is keeping track that is almost 2 months that my bike has been down this summer due to electrical gremlins. If I was in the position to ride I would be really much more annoyed. But like I said how can I trust this thing now?

How do they know it was the igniter?

Have the coils, coil wires, and pickup coil been replaced/checked?
