I have some concerns about my sidestand it seems to have a fair amount of sideways movement. Has anybody had one fail? I am thinking about taking it off and shimming it with some washers, I didn't buy the bike new so am not real sure how much slop they have when new.

Check your bolt thoroughly and you might apply some blue loctite, my stand flexes but doesn't have much "play". I had one fall off once and it sure is tricky getting it back on by yourself

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

The only thing I've heard of failing on the kickstand is the little tab you use to put the stand down. It happened to me and only seems to affect the older stands where it looks like the tab is molded in, not attached.
