Just wondered if anyone has tried the air horn from Harbor Freight. It looks identical to the Stebel and is $40.

Dunno about the Harbor Freight issue, but the genuines cost $40, including relay and wiring kit. If you decide to buy the Harbor Freight model, you might wanna check to see if wiring kit is included.

It looks the part but it doesn't really compare well. The "bad boy" is rated at 118dB, and the stebel at 138dB. Remember that dB is a logarithmic scale so that 20dB is very significant. 120dB is considered "unsafe", 150dB causes physical damage to the human body, windows break at 163 db, eardums pop at 190 to 198 db, sounds around 200 db can cause death to humans and are generated near bomb explosions. The space shuttle is around 215 db. Nuclear bombs are 240 to 258 db. They're the same price... get the stebel.

That one'll get you the manufacturer... this one will get you twisted throttle, who sell them for US$39.99.

The diagram at Twisted Throttle shows a pic of the horn mounted horizontal on a DL1000. Further down are instructions that the horn should be mounted vertical (and I believe my instructions said as much) or the horn could fail prematurely. They are also available with chrome rather than black trumpets. Maybe not at TT, but if you do a search you can find them.
And for sure, use the supplied relay.

And this website gets you the horn and the wiring kit for $39.95, instead of paying $29.95 extra at Twisted Throttle. Biker Hiway is where I bought mine.

I actually have a friend who wants a better horn, but is concerned something too loud might make the cages do something stupid also... I think a valid concern. Thats why I like it that you can kinda just tap tap tap the stebel and its not TOO harsh.

That is a good point. Just imagine startling some guy who then spills his coffee in his lap and starts serving and cutting across four lanes of traffic (and it was even the cager you were honking at to begin with).

Well, that'll teach him to drink coffee and not pay attention while driving at high speed on a multi-lane highway.
