Lately my HJC half helmet is annoying me. The wind noise is just too high. But since HJC is the kia of the helmet world. I'm looking for some suggestions on what might work better.

I had to give up on my half helmet and go with a 3/4 to keep the lid from trying to garrotte me at 70mph+.

I just tried a castle and it wasn't much better.
I don't ride with a windshield. One more wrench to throw in the works, but I like making it difficult.

earplugs...no half helmet or skid lid will kill the wind noise....and neither will your screen (or lack of one)

What Rob said. My full face helmet behind a nose high windscreen still offers a lot of wind noise. Since hearing loss is irreversible, and Tinnitus is a malady best relieved by an act of immolation, I highly recommend these: http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er20.aspxI'm not a fan of the highly occlusive industrial plugs, as they remove almost all the engine sounds, and give you that heartbeat effect. The Etymotics only cut down roughly half of the noise, and still allow one to hear the bike and loud conversation. A fitted string is available too, allowing one to stow them on a mirror stem. They are easily washed, and seem to be waterproof to me. Best $12 I've spent in a looong time.

No doubt the etymotics are superior plugs, I used them for years at work, but I find EAR foam plugs to be the most comfortable while still allowing a good range of hearing (barring, of course, my tinnitus). Hearing the engine over the pipes is another story altogether.

Funny how that works - expandable foam plugs drive me koo koo, but the Etymotic three ringers (after wetting with a swab of lip juice) seem just right. The drug store mold-able wax jobs are comfy too, but take away too much sound for my liking. Etymotic claims one can saw off the largest ring for comfort without problems. A tip that may be apparent already - reach around behind your head, and pull the top of the ear up & back to get good ear plug insertion. I made the mistake in my yute-hood of offloading pneumatic bulk tankers with no hearing protection. If I recall, we pushed 1500 cfm of compressed air through the tanks - enough to push 25 tons of powder up a 100' vertical pipe in 40 minutes. Oh-my-Gawd -- were those tanks loud. (Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?)

This is the key problem with half helms in my epxerience. I have one and wore it on a run to Phoenix last year and have not had use for it since. Its a workout for the vertebrae and neck musculature at 80 MPH.

I really have to argue. My Davida Jet really cuts out so much noise. I can't hear a thing when people talk to me and the wind noise is no more than in a full face. OK it's not dead but it never will be.

If you want to wear a 1/2 and cut down on some of the wind noise this is what I did. Get a packet of those vinyl door edge guards that go over the edge of your car door. Cut to the length of the strap, slip over and put a tape wrap around the top and bottom to keep it from falling off. This stiffens the strap and keeps it rigid. You'll still get the same wind noise you get without a lid + a tad from the helmet - But you'll be surprised at the amount that comes from the straps. Whenever I want quiet and comfort - I go 3/4. No wind noise .

Love my Scorpion EXO-200, 3/4 helmet. My old DOT half-helmet now feels like there is an aquarium on top of my head. The 3/4 helmet is so much more balanced. Plus I love the shield option for cooler or wet weather - almost like a full face helmet coverage. I cannot see any side of the helmet, the view out is unobstructed, that sold me fast. It is a bit hotter in really warm weather. Give one a try.

Just bought a Z1R Ace helmet. No more half helmet, but then I'm also one of those outlaws that rides quite a bit without one.

I'm convinced its the straps that cause the problem. But I can't quite picture what you did without seeing it.
I have a nice Nolan 3/4 but I don't like to wear it in the warm weather.

Are you saying that edge treatment keeps a 1/2 lid from parachuting off the old bean at high speed?

I usually wear a half helmet and have owned quite a few different brands. The last one was a Skid Lid made by Fulmer , I think. They all "parachuted", had a lot of wind resistance and felt heavy in a cross wind. They all gave the "mushroom head" look. I gave the year old Skid Lid to my nephew.
Well I still wear a half helmet, I bought a HCI "Retro" helmet, actually two. They have none of those problems, fairly snug to the head and low profile, no " mushroom head". Besides they're DOT approved, light, good looking and cheap. As far as wind noise, never hear wind noise, I've got Septres.

That looks very similar to Gina S favorite Davida helmet. Is the neck/ear curtain removable or did you get the other model?

Heres what I wear 90 % of the time. Mine has the small visor. I have a fly screen. I fits very well, the only time I notice any lift is around 90+. I don't play in that range very often,police sorta frown on that  Mike

I always thought the air vents on my Scorpion were useless, they never seemed to flow any noticable air. This weekend, in my sidecar ride, I was amazed to fell a lot of nice cool air flowing through the top of the helmet (my first side ca ride, and I'm noticing helmet airflow..). I have the Roadster screen on my America and I guess it sure does cut down on the wind. Even though my line of sight is well above the windscreen, I get no flow thru the helmet vents. Might have to pop that shield off for the rest of the summer.

Mike, Nexl half helmets are the best, in my opinion. They are expensive, but when you hold one in your hand you realize why. Very light and well made. They use to do some very nice graphics, I tried to order their "speed racer" model in 03, but they were out of my size and haven't redone it since.

That's the HCI50. Best fitting, most comfortable helmet I've owned to date. I'm very happy with it and you found it $10 less than I did! I'm sure you'll like it. Regards, Tom

I just purchased a 100 scorpion new helmet.It has pockets for mp3 player and glass lid that slides in/out o place..very cool and little buffeting so far.Real road test to Nelson this weekend and will either be in love or looking for helmet number 5(I am a helmet ******!)
life is good..I am retired..sold my America in 2008,bought a Rocket and sold that in 3/2013 and now own a new Triumph Bonneville T-100

I ordered a Nexl helmet July 19th. They had said that it would take 4 weeks to deliver. I never got any updates. So I called 3 times, each time I got an answering machine. Yesterday I sent a not so upbeat email. Note they already smacked my card for 175 bucks. And finally got a response. They are not planning on shipping until the end of September. But they are willing to give me free overnight shipping whoopity doopee. Needless to say I'm demanding my money back. And will never do business with these jokers again.
