Just my $0.02. I've never done it but back in the day, if you wanted to lower your van or pick-up you would put the spring in a bucket of cold water filled up to where you wanted to make the cut. The water kept the rest of the spring cool while you torched off one or two coils. I read this in a "25 years of truckin'" magazine.
