No it's not really a request for donor parts, but I've just been out for a ride about. I don't think it's my age(45) or the 29 years of riding, but my lower back is killing me. I think it's more to do with the awful state of the roads round here , not just country lanes but major A roads, I don't ride in the gutter I fully occupy my space on the road, but theres potholes round every manhole andmissing road surface down the centre of the lane, it's truly appaling. I thought we paid road tax to sort this. It makes me wonder what are the roads like in your part of the world??, I hope their better than here in Scotland.

Dwight left this advice on another thread, and since he's in Joisy this weekend (I think) he may not see this, so I'll pass it on.

Quote:

Well Ed, I'd take that bet...but only if you see this and immediately get on the floor on your back, bend your knees to your chest with you arms around those knees for 30 seconds. And then with you shoulder-blades square to the floor, cross your right leg over your left, and bend them both to the left and hold for 15 seconds, and then do the opposite leg crossover and bend them to the right for 15 seconds. Repeat this complete process a total of 10 times.

And you must do this every morning and every night.

These are the stretches my chiropractor taught me to do after my lower back "went out" the first time, right after I turned 50, five years ago. And I say the "first time" because I often fail to follow his advice, unfortunately.

I haven't tried it myself, but I regularly train with weights so don't really have any problems there.

In this area, even some of the main roads are not paved and most of the highways are only partly paved. I often take the dirt road into town because it's usually smoother than the paved one.

There are a couple of exercises that may help. Extend your arms to the sides and twist left and right as far as you can. Same starting position, alternately touch your toes (at least as nearly as possible) with the opposite hand, right hand to left toes, straighten up, then left hand to right toes.

You could also try reporting the faults:

Let me put it this way, the Florida state bird is the construction crane. On-ramps where the old asphalt has been ground off and the next coat isn't there yet, just the chewed-up grooves. Moving canals and adding lanes and water and sewer projects...

Time out.

Okay, I'm better now. Most of the roads are nice and smooth.

Have you thought about a kidney belt?

Sounds like better shocks are at the top of your list of ride improvements. I know that's my first planned big upgrade since I feel the stock absorbers don't.

Roads are really bad around here too. No missing road surface but big holes and bumps that lift your butt off the seat and hurt.

Thanks for the replies, all suggestions noted, ten years ago I had an operation on my back after a work accident, so I'm grateful to be riding at all, it was 10 months of agony. Just continally pushing myself got me better, oh and at the time copious quantities of a certain herbal painkiller, a habit I have thankfully given up.

I also have a bad back. The only thing I don't like about my America is the forward foot controls. Not being able able to stand on pegs kills my lower back. I moved my passenger pegs to exhaust hanger hole and it helped quite a lot. Still not great, though. Recently installed a set of mid-pegs. Those things make quite a difference, even though our seats are too low for them with my 34" inseam.

Corbin seat, (before price increase) and floorboards really helped me. Could only ride 45-60 mins before being limted by back pain... Now can put some weight thru legs on rough terrain, if the ends of those floorboards holds up... Rice safe!
PS: most of the roads around here in rural VA are great, unlike the roads in my hometown west of Chicago, don't know how you even ride those torn up things.....off road package would help.

The roads suck here too. There's always construction, but it seems that they always fix the same roads, while others which need repair badly just keep getting worse.

Ian, in being true to the spirit of "New" England, roads here in Connecticut (my part of it at least) are probably in just as poor shape as in Scotland! I try to avoid manholes covers as much as possible, because they always seem to be about 1 inch (25mm) below the surrounding road surface, not to mention, always conveniently sited in the middle of the area where ones tire normally travels!(almost as if on purpose one would suspect!!) There are many roads in my area posted as "Scenic Roads" which basically means rutted and paritally gravel/partially asphalt, in which the state apparently has absolved itself of any requirement to perform maintenance, simply by posting the "Scenic Road" signs...

The fun part in the UK is all those old cobblestones-especially when it is raining!
