Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of the modular helmets vs. full-face and open-face ones? I always used an open-face and liked it. When I bought the bike, the owner gave me his full face, and it's not as bad as I thought it would be, but I like having my face uncovered when I'm sitting or driving locally (it cheers up the girls who pass by). Can you ride comfortably with the modular open, and close it for high-speed?

He was fun while he lasted.

I use a full face helmet. I also use specticals. because I use specticals I went looking for a modular helmet so I could put my helmet on and off without taking off my glases. They are noisisr than the 1 piece helmets. I bought , after trying several brands, a Nolan N102 as it was the least noisey. At low speeds I sometimes run with up. Like comming out of a 100 zone to a 50 zone. I once saw a mate sliding down the road and his helmet was worn right through to the lining in the chin area of his helmet. I have worn full face helmets since. Hope that helps you in your choices.

Ian's spot on in his assessment. A bit noisier, but nice if you wear glasses or when you're wearing shades.
No need to remove them to don or doff your helmet.

No.
Keep it closed when the bike is moving.

I use the HJC Symax, quite comfortable.

I have a large chin / nose height windshield that allows for an open flip up helmet at highway speeds. I imagine that without a windshield, it wouldn't work out too well open.

If you want to try one without breaking the bank, this is a decent helmet.

Kim wears glasses, and we found a modular to be the only way she could get her glasses on and off easily, and even take the helmet off with them on.

I've worn the HJC CL-Max for three years now and been very happy with it. Mine fits snuggly so most of the road noise is filtered out. The vents are good for keeping the face shield clear of fog but not much more. I usually ride with the face shield slightly open in the warm weather. I'm not sure how much is breathing related and how much is due to claustrophobia. I like being able to flip the helmet up to scratch my nose or talk to other riders at stops. I wear glasses so being able to pull the helmet on over them is a plus. My old Bell full face helmet was no quieter than my new one and not nearly as convenient. I often flip the front up for comfort at 25 MPH speeds.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I have the HJC modular helmet and I love it. It isn't much noisier than the full face helmets I've had and it is very convenient.

If you don't mind being different, you could go with the Roof Boxer Helmet which can be worn with the flip up portion "up" (it actually rotates all the way to the back).

Or, you even more different than that, is the ROOF Rover helmet which has a soft, removable face mask.

I have a Vega Summit II that has been OK... of course I don't really have anything to compare it too since it's the only helmet I've worn since I bought my bike.

+1 on the HJC CL-Max being very cool and on/off easy with glasses. And it's the only modular large enough for my head. The BMW helmet folks (can't remember the name) have a really expensive 3XL modular but the size runs really small. The CL-Max is noisy but on longer rides I wear earbud headphones that block out most of the noise.

Look like the new HJC CL-Max Evolve Helmets are replacing the HJC CL-Max.

Wonder what the difference is?
