I just got through tightening my chain and i noticed that there is so forward and backward play in the sprocket. Is this normal?I am not stupid about motorcycles cause i have had a few but for some reason i think I have to baby this bike and any second its just gonna break apart.BTW its a 2003 TBA with 8k on the bike.anyhow the sprocket moves a little when i let out the clutch before it engages.1/4 inch play maybe a little more. Thanks

It's The cush drive. A rubber piece in the hub. I have 23000 miles on mine and I have about 1/8 th of play. It depends on your driving style how soon you will have to change it out. 1/4 inch might be getting close, I am realy not sure though.

You should not have any play in the cush drive, although I had a 1/4 of play for the last, like 5000 clicks. I finally replaced it with the T-bird model. #'s on in the vault. I have not had a chance to take her out yet but it should ride like a new bike. I have 12000 km. on it and the chain and sprockets look good.

When I replace my chain, sprocket, and chain ring at 21000 miles, I installed a T-Bird cush rubber. There is no play now and the T-Bird rubber is a somewhat harder material. Highly recommended. Part # is T2012211 and should be available from a dealer for about $65.

My stealer charged or robbed me??? $175.00 Au for the thunderbike rubber. I do think it was worth it though. There is no slap in the chain when it drops into gear now.

Dazco over at Trat.net posted that he took a leather belt, cut it into strips and inserted the strips into the gaps of the cush dive. Worked great and had no negative issues.

I assume that he did that keeping the old cush drive and just filling in the gap/looseness? Sounds like a good idea to do anytime you change the rear sprocket??

I am really amazed in the results of installing my new cush drive. Especially the shifting. Everything is so much tighter. No clunking into first gear and smooth shifting all the way through. She rides like new. Actually better then new. No kidding. Purchased mine from the dealer. 100 bones.

I believe the term is 'jury rigging'

Personally, I prize my bike and the way she runs a little too much to be that cheap. A cush drive is not that expensive.
