I was enjoying a brew with stueybond the other night and the specifications of this alleged Triumph 2009 big cruiser came up. Now as this is a well populated forum I'm guessing at the very least someone from the Triumph marketing department is monitoring these pages for ideas and feedback. So heres my plan...lets list all the specs we want in the new cruiser and maybe someone in the office might pickup the an idea or two...its worth a shot. My list Belt drive Parralel twin 1200-1500ish cc Rocket back wheel Same layout as the Speedmaster rake trail etc Same instrument layout as the Speedmaster The same style of tank as the Speedy Spoked front wheel and a horn that doesnt sound like its off a scooter ok ppl lets get it on
...yes, that is a single seat...no, I will not put the other seat on...yes, I am selfish...yes, you should buy your own bike

Keep the chrome on the instrument pot but add a tach the same size as the speedo right beside it. Make the gauge lights brighter. Halogen headlamp STANDARD!!!! Oil pressure gauge STANDARD!!!!!!! Make the dash out of metal...not POS plastic. Keep the spokes but do some type of sealed wheel allowing tubeless tires, progressive front springs and 440 rear shocks (standard) Leather seat standard. Amen on the custom paint!!

Drag bars. Highway pegs. Six Speed Trans. Put the tach where it belongs. Decent hard bags. Shaft or belt drive. Suspension with adjustable preload and rebound damping, front and rear.

My only real gripe since new. Other than that, I wouldn't have it any other way. I think I'll keep her.

I'd like them to take the 675 Daytona, slightly de-tune it for a little less high-up HP and a little more low and mid-range Torgue, put the Tiger's long-legged suspension units on it, restyle it to resemble the Tiger, and what would you have? A Tiger "Cub" that would probably be at least 80-100lbs lighter than it's "Momma", and something that you could still use for swift highway riding, AND actually use out there in the dirt when you spot that fireroad that goes up that hill off that highway, and which looks like it would get progressive worse as you'd go up it.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

This thread started out with what I'd like in the 2009 cruiser. Is it really getting pushed back another year?

1300-1500cc twin that is "triumphed" in apparence. belt drive. better looking front discs. fi system that is not a pain to dial in.
I'd like to say that I'm VERY happy with my 07' 900cc SM. I think it is fantastic on country roads and is just fine on the highway. I can't imagine how a 1500cc bike would be.
I've gone through 6 bikes in about 7 years and the SM is as close to perfect for me as I'll ever get.

Uh ha! Yep. I hear ya, Phil. And I'd like a bag full o' Twenties left on my doorstep each morning too!
I say this only because...first, this new 1500cc Triumph will basically be a "cruiser", and that type of motorcycle isn't ever going to be designed with weight-saving as a priority.(people who buy cruisers usually like the "massiveness" of their looks)
Secondly, our "little" 790 and 865cc BAs and Speedmasters are already 497lbs(and that's "dry-weight" BTW, which already makes them one of the lightest cruisers on the present market), and so to imagine a machine with almost twice the displacement as our BAs and Speedies ever hitting the showrooms and being almost 50 lighter is, well, a nice dream anyway.
(BTW...welcome to the site)

Well Ron, the words "triumph" and "victory" ARE pretty synonymous, ya know! (did you get the bike yet???)

Dwight, my original point with this was if they can make a 160hp superbike that weighs 400lbs, they can make a 450lb cruiser. A superbike chassis has to be strong to handle that power. And superbikes cost about $11k. So it's not an impossible dream, it's just something they don't want to do.

Yep. You're probably right, Brian. But as I mentioned above in my first reason as to why a 450lb cruiser(and not a super or sportsbike, once again) would be low on Triumph's list to produce, would be that the vast numbers of potential cruiser buyers really don't place a premium about the weight of their bikes. It's much more the looks that count, and especially, as I also mentioned, that "massive" look. As an examble, look at the primary cases on a standard Bonneville and then notice how in an attempt to give the BAs and Speedmaster that more massive look, the engineers in Hinckley made that primary gear case even larger on them. This idea can also be seen on the countershaft sprocket cover which is also much larger on the Triumph cruisers than on the standard Bonnie.
In other words, even if Triumph could somehow shave a lot of weight off their cruiser line, I feel they wouldn't make such a machine because basically the vast numbers of the buying public probably wouldn't particularly care for it.
But, just like yourself, I too can usually appreciate any lighter machine's more capable road handling and higher "fun-factor".

Our bikes are about 45lb heavier than a standard Bonnie. I wonder where that extra weight comes from. It looks like the Speedy's rear wheel is one spot, but the BA's have spoke wheels, most of the 7lb difference is probably the second front brake. Is our frame that much heavier?

Its the "Cool" factor. Everybody knows "Cool" is really heavy. I am sure in your life you have heard something like "Cool man, that is really heavy dude". Well, naturally the America and Speedmaster being the same parts as the T-100 weigh more. They are a lot cooler! and thats a scientific fact Jack!

My opinion is the Thunderbird was darn close to the perfect bike. Put a little more chopperesque or cruiser styling to it and that's pretty near what "I" would want.
