Triumph Australia rang me this morning, they will replace the chain guard and tyre, still having some minor dramas with the local Triumph dealer, but all will be sorted.

Count me in....broken rear bolt, the front loosened, and now a chewed up tire.

Moe:
I'm confused. Why are some of these replies now edited as "off topic". I think this was one I posted on 7/15:

</font><blockquote><font class="small">Quote:</font><hr />
I think when the bolt gets tightened at the factory, it puts a twist on the guard itself. I think a washer under the flange might help.

Good point. I'll try a rubber washer under mine. Still waiting on the chrome replacement from Triumph, but I remain hopeful.

Called JCS in Perth on Mr Keets behalf and explained he has a chain guard with a broken tab through the rear bolt hole. They knew it happens and were very happy to supply a black take off as a replacement. Their mechanic had a couple of ideas about this problem.

First, he pointed out the diameter of the head of the allen bolt that holds the wheel end of the guard to the side of the swingarm is a little smaller than he wants to see, considering the lack of material around that area of the attaching tab. He supplied a thick washer with a larger diameter to increase the surface area clamped. Looks like the washer is going to support the thinnest part of the tab and take the flex away from the bolt hole.

Second, he said his experiences has been that many bikes with throw over saddle bags break the chain guard, so make sure the bags are not laying on the guard or you could end up with a bag in your chain.

Easy fix, thanks to a friendly Triumph dealer.

Regards to all,
STU

While lubing chain recently, noticed my stock, black chainguard was bent to within a millimeter of rubbing the chain. I bent it back into place thinking one of my kids or someone may have bent it. After reading Stu's post, went out and looked at condition again. Indeed, when suspension is compressed, my Tourmaster slant bag (with Magna brackets) hits guard. I'll have to rectify that somehow.
Thanks for posting that, Stu!

Yeah, that would do it! Now I understand. My Magna bracket have about 1.5" - 2" of clearance to the chainguard. That is strange it would be that close. I guess it just depends which guards you own.

On mine, its not the chrome bracket that hits, its the bottom of the bag. Often have quite a bit of weight in there, and the soft side doesn't keep the bag straight out. The support pushes into side of bag, and bottom edge curves around allowing bottom seam to hit chainguard. Think I'll reinforce backs, move the tools and water bottles to left side, and lightweight stuff to right.

Gotcha. My hard-back Saddleman bags don't hang too much below the support and are parallel with the support piece. No way they could ever touch the guard. (Large size Saddleman)

Well, it's now August 6th and no replacement chain guard from Triumph/Peter Carleo. I left him a voice message last week, he was on vacation. I'll call again if nothing shows by Friday. I shipped my broken guard to him with delivery confirmed on 6/24.

PC told me to file a warranty claim and when they deny it, to call him and he will take care of it. So, I filed a claim with my dealer on Monday, they called today and said that Triumph will replace the guard and bolts( thus no denied claim ). Cool !!! Triumph rocks !!!

Stopped in to the dealer today to get a warranty replacement for my airbox ( it was cracked ), and the chain guard and bolts were already there ! Reported it on Monday, it arrived Thursday, get it installed on Friday. That's pretty kick a$$ service.

Mounted my new chrome guard today. Got creative and picked up two shiny, chrome washers from Ace (great selection).
Well, they don't fit into the tiny v-shaped area. Pulled out the old grinder/cutting wheel and notched them to fit. Hope this works.

I told Peter we had over 30 broken guards so far. He said for folks to call him and he would get them replaced. You have to keep calling, but it appears he will follow through.

Just an FYI. I just replaced my broken chrome chain guard. The new one came in yesterday. Looks like Triumph has heard the complaints because they improved the mounting bracket. The mounting bracket is a lot thicker compared to my original one. I don’t think there will be a problem with this thing breaking…..

Interesting. My replacement looked the same. Any chance you can shap a photo of the new mounting bracket?
Did you get it through Pete's and if so, did they cover it under warranty?

Black one broke, welded and then broke again a few thousand km's later. Gouged the edge of my rear tire. It's now welded again, but am going to keep an eye on it.

I'm going to get this thread started again, I'm curious how many more guards have been broken since last count. I placed a call to the above mentioned Peter Carleo, left a message, we'll see what develops there. I just want some reinforcement for my case, and to see if he's actually still replacing these.

Funny you should bring this up. While riding into work today
I heard some rattling. Got to work, felt the chain guard, it was loose. To dark to see if it was broken or if bolt came off. Hopefully I will be able to something with it so I can ride home.

Good reminder to check my bolts. One year later, everything looks fine with the replacement. I guess those chrome washers I cut to provide more support are doing their job.

lost a second one at Kohansby's Exxon, 103 N Pottstown Pike, Exton, PA this past July 29th. OEM black one. Tossed it into the trash bin.

NOTICE:
that in this picture taken upon discovery - Both bolts are tight and the tabs are flush with the swingarm.

Well, I just got a call from Peter Carleo, he wants me to ship him my broken chain guard and he will send me a replacement. He said he hasnt had any other problems since he replaced Al's. Looks like he is still good on his word, that's fantastic! When I get my new one, I will update.

I got my replacement chain guard today, I'm very happy that this got resolved FAST! The new chainguard is absolutely superior to the original. Instead of a one piece stamped design, it now has thicker mounting brackets that were welded to the guard and chromed. The mount tabs are twice as thick as the guard piece. The total turnaround time for me sending mine to Triumph and getting a new replacement was 6 days

My chain guard is still okay. At least I think so. It's been in a box ever since I put on the belt drive 4 or 5 years ago. I don't check up on it as often as I should.
