My method wasn't as elegant. Three superbright LEDs (with built in resistors) soldered to the "always on" 12v part of the ciruit board (listed above). I used a piece of milk jug plastic to keep them aimed up at the plate.
So, I have a very brite brake light that flashes and a well lit plate.
