When I let my clutch out, it doesnt start to catch until about the last half inch. I know there is an adjustment for the slack in the lever right? Or maybe it doesn't need adjusting and I'm just worrying. Is this last half inch about the same ball park w/everyone else? Bikes only got 2k miles on it and can't imagine that it's shot already.

The adjustment at the lever is easy. I think the key point is that there is some free play at the bar lever before the lever at the transmission begins to move. It doesn't sound like you have enough free play.

The clutch lever should have 2-3mm of free play.

Are you saying that when the clutch lever is pulled all the way in, I should have 2-3mm of play before the clutch starts to engage?
I have way more than this. The clutch lever is almost completely out before I start to engage, maybe I have 5mm of friction zone before the clutch is all the way out.

No, I think that means leave the lever alone, touch the end of the lever and it should wiggle 2-3 mm.

Bill - are you talking about the round disc that lets you set the lever closer to the grip?
To me it feels like the clutch is letting out way to late.

The 2-3mm is the measured free play gap created at the cable end of the lever.

I get the 2-3mm at the cable end of the lever. I'm trying to figure out if my clutch is not engaging early enough. I've only riden one other bike besides my triumph, and I can't for the life of me remember where the clutch started to catch.
W/ the lever pulled all the way in, I have to let it almost all the way out before I start to engage. Is this normal? Is this to far? Is there an adjustment for this? I went threw the owners manual but it is pretty non-descript.

Ramsound is correct and that is measured where the cable attaches to the lever that gap where the cable is should open 2-3mm before the cable actually has any load on it.
It is a feel kind of thing too you can have a little more play if thats the pull you like as long as the clutch fully disengages when pulled almost all the way in and has no load when fully released.

We were posting at the same time. I misunderstood the question. My clutch starts to grab sooner than that but not fully until most of the way out. I PMed you a little more detail in an effort to try and be clear.

Try making your secondary adjustment at the primary case. I had to adjust my clutch cable there first before I could get a satisfactory amount of play at the handle.

The whole point of the free play is to make sure there is no load on the clutch when the lever is released. If there was no free play, how could you REALLY know that the clutch is fully dissengaged? That's the principal anyway...

I have the free play. I want my clutch to start catching earlier. It only starts to engage at the last 1/2 inch. Ian was sending me some PMs. If my exhaust comes in this week I'll mess with the clutch and exhaust this weekend.

no the free play is to make sure it's fully engaged. Disengaged is what happens when you pull the lever all the way to the grip.

I don't think it's swapped. The bike wont start to move until the clutch lever is almost completely let out with the bike in gear.
You get the free play, with the lever all the way out w/ the bike in nuetral, or when moving and in gear rightt?
When you pull the clutch lever in you disengage the clutch plate from the transmission, correct me if I'm wrong.

Benny did have his words reversed as he stated but you are also correct. He was saying the free play ensures fully engaged but said disengaged by mistake.

I always think of pulling in the clutch lever as "activating" or "engaging" the clutch, when in reality, you are disengaging it. I understand it, I just don't think in correct motor-speak
