And if our bikes are as reliable as we tell ourselves, which I think the verdict is still out on...it didn't matter when we bought them. We didn't know one way or the other, the same as when anyone else buys their bikes.

Our bikes simply do not fit into the Lemming mentality that all the rest of the metric cruisers fall into. Honda VTX? A dime a dozen. Yamahammer and Zuki and Kaw cruisers a dime a dozen. Dere everywhere.
Harley are a nickel a dozen and are on every streetcorner , back alley and parked in front of every red light district house in the hood from CA to NY

yup and soon the 2nd mortgage choppers will be also...
Just because something is popular with the masses doesn't make it bad...(ice cream is good AND popular)and just because something is unique doesn't make it good...(the AMC Pacer was unique too)
but and it's a big butt (arsenalfan) if funds were unlimited I would own at least 2 harleys, 1 chopper, a Duc, A beemer, a honda, a Suzuki, a cpl more Trumps and a few others all because of there uniqueness unto themselves, not their uniqueness on the street.

"Theres Something About A Trumpet" Something the others just do not have.
Its called "class"
Admit it....as we ride around and park we get more attention than all the Lemming bikes combined. Even a shiny custom chopper does not garner as much attention as my bike parked in front of my fav watering hole on a Satidy night.
I get many more "Nice bike" comments than all the Harley Lemmings combined. And it does not matter how much chrome they have hanging off their behemoths.
Your average non motorcylclist gazes at all the bikes and the eye naturally gravitates to the sexy image of the Black Speedmaster conveniently overlooking the staid Harley baggers and Sportsters with all the custome chrome.

While it may be true (at least in my opinion) that our BIKES do in fact HAVE CLASS...
It is a sad fact, that bassed upon our elitist bashing of all other brands, that some of us lack the class our bikes possess

I dont know.....we seem to be much more open and liberal towards other bikes than most MC clubs. Your average motorcycle club in thes US requires you ride a Harley. How can you get more snobbish and elitist than that?
The current membership of the most well known motorcycle clubs outlaw or otherwise all identify with Harley and abjectly thumb their collective noses at all other bikes.
They seem to have forgotten the history of scooters in these US. (They need to watch Marlon Brando in the Wild Ones and note what he rode and how many Triumphs his fellow riders were on)
We are in no way as individuals or as Triumph owners any where as elitist and selfish as your tried and true Hardley Davisdson riders.
If I had a lot of spare cash I would buy a Hardley too just to have for PGR rides.
Truth be told I know a few PGR riders who bought one cause they are so into the PGR ethic of honoring America's heroes that they felt a need to ride a Harley for PGR events.
I know one who bought a Harley for that reason but he admits his Honda Valkyrie is still a superior tourer to the used Road Kink he bought.

I don't care if you ride for the PGR, belong to a 1% club, belong to a mom and pop club, belong to a church club, a 4H club, a turkey club on rye, or a canadian club, if you're bashing someone elses ride because it's "not what your ride" and "your ride is so much better/cheaper/faster" than you are and elitist and are demonstrating a clear and well defined LACK of class...regardless of how much your bike may or may not possess

I know a few guys with atleast 100,000 in a couple years on an old triumph, myself included. When I was younger I used to almost live on the bike. I carried a sleeping bag and a couple changes of clothes and rode all over the country. I worked here and there to eat and buy gas. I did this on the 1966 TR6C chopper in my photo gallery. I have several friends who have done the same type of thing. So to say there are no guys like me out there who put a couple hundred thousand on in a few years is a load.I admit these days I do 6,000 to 7,000 miles a year but I am also much older and own a house and business now. I had no responsibilities and few posesions back then.
As for breaking down. ALL bike , cars , planes , bicycles ,and any other machine breaks eventually. I persoanlly have had no problems with my new Triumph. I used to have a small problem every now and then on my 66 and a few big ones too. Lucky the big issues were close to home. I owned a pan. Was one of my first bikes. It was the worst piece of junk I ever rode and turned me off to Harleys. On the flip side my best friend rides nothing but Pans and rode all over with me and rarely had any problem. He had a little 61 inch EL that never broke and a 57 hot rod pan that was pretty good but did have minor issues from time to time. So I only knock Harley in jest and actually like them just don't want one. Couldn't pay me to ride rice.My Pan was someone elses worn out nightmare, I didn't know any better back then and it looked good.
Actual mileage when I was a kid I couldn't tell you I had a mini speedo on my chopper that fell apart in a few months and never put one back on. I do know I rode to New Mexico , Wyoming , The Dakotas . LA (State) , Fl , Canada , Maine , Utah and a few others in less than 2 years and my starting point for each was here in the Poconos. I rode other places too but thats a short list.
I learned all I need to know about life by killing smart people and eating their brains. Eat right ,Exercise ,Stay fit, Die Anyway!

Pedantic as ever, I would like to point out that by definition, an "elitist" is part of an "elite," and that elite would define what is "class." It is perfectly allowable for an elite to judge the actions and attitudes on non-elite individuals and still be "classy."
Comments by the non-elite about the "inappropriateness" of the elite have no value because they are, by definition (or by fiat) not part of the system that makes the rules.
I'm just saying...

Hey Guys, really, this whole thing is just SO unimportant and ridiculous. How can you guys even think about stuff like this when there are more important things to worry about. For instance, poor little Paris has been released from jail, and is now going to serve 40, not 23, days in the Maximum Security Hilton Mansion Detention Center, under lock and key and the scrutinizing eye of Mom and Pop Hilton! You can bet your a#$ I've already lodged complaints with the UN Human Rights Commission, the International Red Cross and Amnesty International!! Forget Guantanamo Bay, this is SERIOUS man!! What kind of ANIMAL would lock poor little Paris up in such a deplorable, inhumane and insidious place as Hilton Castle?!! What has happened to our humanity, our compassion, the rights of the filthy rich?!

Now im with you on that one...Not the butt bit, But if i was to win the lotto. I would have a bike collection to rival that of the Barber Museum. And they would come from all corners of the earth.
The list of bikes that I would like to have in my garage is HUGE. And i must be honest and sat that Japan is very well represented on that list.
Im my opionion, the Japaneese motorcycle manufacturers are the most important reason for the quailty and reliability of todays motorcycles. And they do not get the respect they deserve.

well then...theres lots of us around here ! We call it pride in ownership.
Is it really wrong to feel that a Triumph is a piece of history in and of itself that eclipses the moronic lemming call to arms that typically is represented by HOG chapters everywhere. ?
Heck I bet that 99.9% of us around here ride with other bikes and other than kidding around we do not make rude comments publicly to the riders of those "other" bikes.
Wish it could be the same for them. How many times has a hardley enthusiast looked at our bikes and referred to them deferentially as "cute little things?"
Ever had a Harley owner ask you if Triujmphs are "Still pieces of Junk" ? And then go on to remark on all the old cliches about the problems that Triumph had with the electrics and oil leaks back in the day.? They conveniently forget the AMF days of Harley.
They so often dismiss our rides as insignificant.
I believe that a goodly proporrtion of us in this forum were drawn to the Triumph for two reasons.
1. We looked at em and we fell in love at first sight.
2. We realized that by purchasing our riders we were going to be off the beaten track and away from the masses of everyday rides seen on the roadways.
The Triumphs strike a chord in us that is uniquely out of sync with the rest of the crowd.
Hence Triumphs marketing them.. "Go Your Own Way"

so how does that makes us better?
It makes us better HERE.. this a Triumph site. Unfortunately that doesn't extend beyond these hallowed halls.
And for you folks who don't like Harley bashing.. simple answer. DON'T READ THE THREAD!...
As much crap as I have to put up with about what I chose to ride, I say bash away.. (in fact "other bikes" includes Harley bashing in it's header) this is the only place I'm not made to feel inferior because of that.
And a lot of people.. not all .. bought a Harley because their peers told them that is the ONLY bike to buy.. not because they chose it.. or it them but because they didn't look around at their options to chose something that better suits them. I look around daily and see 5'2" women weighing 100 pounds riding Fat Boys and Road kings.. folks, this is not the bike they should be riding but it's because their peers have led them to believe that a Harley is the ONLY bike to buy, they are out on the road with a bike that they are not physically capable of handling.
I bought my bike because of the looks and the fit.. didn't know anything about Triumph but it was a reasonably priced bike with a good warranty and after 5 years and over 30000 miles, it has never left me stranded.. I'd say that's a pretty dang good service record.
And Rob... the side covers come off because they were not properly installed..

Triumph has been around 1 year longer than HD and several of those years were "shut down" years with limmited or no production...so HD has history too

NEVER pehaps it's because of the HD riders I meet are primarly at PGR events and tend to be mor serious bikers than the run of the mill weekend warrior types...but I have NEVER had one single disparraging comment...quite the opposite in fact most are thrilled and ask a billion questions and recall their old Trump... perhaps I've just been lucky
