I know lately all I have talked about is selling t-shirts and my bent tank. But I have to brag on my son some. He finished 5th grade last week and worked hard all through elementary school. One of the awards he got was a letter and certificate from President Bush for going all the way through elementary school with all A’s on all of his report cards. He was one of 4 kids in his school who did this.

That's great - too often our society venerates jocks and forgets the people that actually make (literally) this country what it is.
I've always found it amazing that Joe Jock can brag about his 47 varsity letters, but the guy who qualifies for Mensa is a braggart for pointing that out.

Awesome! I bet you are one proud papa! I am always much more proud of my children's accomplishments than my own.

Now wait a minuet I was a 5 year varsity football letterman (Yes I made the Varsity team in the 8th grade), caption of the team my senior year.I was recruited by several small IAA and Division2 schools, but I also was an A-B student in a college prep school and I have an IQ in the 130's. So not all of us jocks are dumb. Oh yea and Quinn starts on both his soccer and basketball teams. Just giving you a hard time.........

Of course my point was that it seems okay to celebrate people with gentic physical gifts, but not people with genetic mental gifts. As a society, we know everything about Lindsay Lowhan (sp?), but nothing about renown "rocket scientists." Just something that has always stuck in my craw. And of course brains and athleticism are not mutually exclusive. For example, here is a picture of an athletic 67 year old - the current cycling road race and time trial champion of the state of Florida - me!

And Whitt, take a bow yourself for evidently instilling good study habits as one of your son's daily responsibilities. (ya know..."that there IQ stuff" doesn't mean squat without THAT little element added into the mix!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

My hat is off to the young man. Great work. Quote:

WOW. On my best day, my I.Q. was measured 3 points over that of a barnyard chicken. Fortunately, I've made it this far. Like the common cockroach, I've proven instinct and genetic circuitry can effectively compete with intelect for the purpose of pure survival.
As for why bragging jocks are more accepted than bragging smart people - Everyone has picked up a ball or gone swimming, ect., so everyone 'THINKS' they're a jock. Most people never did much mental exercise and KNOW they aren't all that bright. H3ll, some even feel threatened. All tolled, I'd give up my letter sweaters for sweet degree and a real career. Keep the kid's nose in the books. That's the ticket.

I got a Honda 65 for making straight A's in the seventh grade. Reward him well, but keep him accountable . Almost two years passed and I backslid. I sold the Honda and bought a 1958 Harley Hummer 175cc two stroke. It rode great and it was a Harley, but I never figured out the hard tail. The rear end kept bouncing out from under me in rough curves. I've owned 3 HDs since, and I've always been skeptical. But my mind always drifted back to the perfect BSA and 2 Triumph Bonnevilles rhat I used to ride. That's why I'm here, I guess.

Whitt,
That is AWESOME news!!
My son is getting out of 5th grade this next week and will start middle school in the fall. Unfortunately, the elementry schools in Oregon do not give letter grades anymore.

WOW!!!!! Give your son, Quinn, a high five from me. Great accomplishment for him and his parents . Pretty awesome, indeed! And, Soren, my two college aged sons did not receive letter grades in California all the way through elementary and middle school. Nor did my wife and I in elementary school, actually. We moved to Portland, Oregon last year when our twins started 4th grade. Up until that point they did not receive letter grades either but, now they do. I think the way grades are reflected are district/school specific. I have nieces and nephews in 4 different states, some receive letter grades and others do not.

What kind of grades do they get instead so that you can track their learning progress? Does the school district just list the percentage instead of a letter grade associated with it? When I was in school it was something like 92-100 was an A, 84-91 B, 76-83 C, 64-75 D, 63 and lower was a big fat F. Just curious...

I'm guessing the grades probably read something similar to this...for Performance: D=Developing (not yet meeting), M=Meeting (meeting grade level expectations), E=Exceeding(exceeding grade level expectations), N/A=not applicable (not currently studied) and for Effort: I=Improvement needed (improved effort needed), S=Satisfactory effort, O=Outstanding Effort. Probably with the addition of a + or - (like an A+ or in this case an E+ or an O+) as the teacher sees fit.

Now that I think back a bit further I do remember that I had a similar scale in early elementary. I don't think I started getting letter grades like A's and B's that fell within percentages until 3rd or 4th grade.

Whitt, congrats on a most definite proud moment. Don't know about Quinn, but right now I'm going through an 8 year old trying NOT to see 9, and hoping he turns out alright in the long run (sure he will, but he's daily testing my patience as only a child can sometimes!) I just hope both my boys do better than I did in school, and are happy, can't ask for much more I suppose! Again, CONGRATS!

Love'em all, and praise them for their accomplishments. Reward to incense, not to pacify.
Above all, be a role model or be sure they have one you would approve of, and spend every minute you can being involved in their young lives. Life is too short to miss out on that.
Quinn did good, Whitt. That's a reflection on you!
