I didn't believe in gas additives either until 1989, when I bought a VW Golf. I had the car for about 4 months when I had to take it in for some warranty work and the dealer informed me they were going to take a look at the intake and exhaust valves. The reason being was that the Bosch Fuel Injection system and US unleaded regular gas weren't exactly working the best. The Octane was correct, but the US fuels weren't clean enough. The basic problem was that the exhaust valves would get coated with carbon and plug within 5,000 to 10,000 miles.
The dealer suggested I use a gas additive or come back in a year for a valve job. The stuff they sold was over $5.00 a bottle and only treated 10 gallons. So instead I started using the Amsoil Gas Additive. After 125,000 miles I never had a problem with the engine. Well not until my Son crashed the car beyond repair. Then the engine had a major problem.
The biggest problem I have with most gas additives is that they are 95% alcohol and 5% gas additive. The alcohol does all the damage to components. The stuff I use has no alcohol just the gas the additives.
