What do you guys think ???
Well, I usually don't like to get involved in these 'additive' discussions, but, since I had such a great day yesterday with fellow members Grump and Jerry (no, they aren't the cartoon mice), I'm feelin' a tad frisky today – So, here goes…
I think that if one were to do the regular maintenance as prescribed by the owner's manual using quality products and lubricants, and use name brand, quality (as if there were such a thing) fuel. There is no need to add 'additives'. I believe that with few exceptions, additives are the equivalent of 19th century 'snake oils' and those that market them are generally the equivalent of side show hucksters. An example of the exceptions may be fuel preservatives if one was to have extended periods of little or no usage.
I do think that additives (some additives) have their place under certain circumstances, particularly when neglect has taken its toll. Examples of additives that fall into this category may be detergents and penetrating solutions. But, when these are necessary it is due to neglect or misuse.
I believe that continued, frequent use of many additives (detergents) may contribute to gasket, hose and or seal failures, particularly in the fuel system. I believe the same can be said for any lubricant that may not be compatible with parts containing rubber or vinyl.
I believe that Marvel Mystery Oil is just a light lubricant. I believe that diluting MMO into a tank of gas (a solvent) reduces whatever lubricity in the MMO to virtually the same as the fuel itself.
I believe the only moving part the MMO makes contact with is the top-most piston ring.
I believe that when it gets there, it is so diluted it just burns off with the fuel it is mixed with.
I believe it has to burn off that rapidly or using it would foul plugs.
I believe that MMO is expertly marketed and the can is eye catching.
I believe that MMO's marketing has been so successful that many have come to believe in its professed attributes.
I believe the best 'additive' is your time and commitment to do the scheduled maintenance, at the scheduled frequencies, using the prescribed materials or equivalants.
I believe I've probably said enough.
