Hi all, Would somebody please tell me if I am right to assume that the airbox snorkel is installed only to reduce air intake noise? I can't for the life of me believe it fills any other function. My dealer said screw around with the snorkel and you will have a mid-throttle flat spot. My feeling is if I use Pat's handy dandy calculator and rejet, or shim, or both and only if I have developed a flat spot I will not have a cronic problem. What say you all and thanks for this fantastic web site. Blueback -Canuck

Just pull the snorkel out completely. It will allow more air in and your bike will run better. You are not going to have to re-jet from just yanking that thing out.

I disagree. I did that and it leaned out the top end considerably. I was running short TORs at the time.

I agree with Friarjohn again, with less restrictive pipes and more air you should rejet. These bikes come from the factory lean to start so in my opinion and increase in air flow should be accompanied by jetting. Lean can hurt the motor.

what about if you plug the hole thats left by removing the snorkel from the airbox that should keep jetting normal me thinks it picked up speed quicker than with it conected yesterday i throttled the bike to 140kph today same stretch of tarmac and i was up to 150kph if you are wondering the limit was 60kph a bit of a change from my speed triple i used to go down that stretch at 200kph before selling it really miss my speed trip

At that point I'm pretty sure there would be no air getting in at all. But I could be wrong...

Might run pretty rich if you plug that up.

But the noise would be gone!
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger......and then it hit me.

I guess there wouldn't be any noise without the engine running.

...really miss my speed trip ...
Man, I hear ya. A lot less happens when you twist the throttle on these... I've had mostly sport bikes up to now. Of the "cruisers" I have owned before were a VMAX, V45 Magna, V65 Sabre and Magna. Those don't really count, though LOL. This is my first real cruiser and I miss the 135+ hp in hand. I miss power wheelies, too.
However, I don't miss the numb hands sore wrists tendinitis in my elbows a crick in my neck 3k miles from a set of tires 6k on a set of brakes/sprockets/chains whining wife while trying to sit on that acorn size/shape excuse of a seat every biker boy in town wanting to street race and willing to kill me over it idiots wheeling beside me-while sharing a lane tickets in a no-tolerance state rednecks and dirtbags shouting, "hey maing, pop a wheelie!" the local, "it's a black thing" thug biker group stupid insurance rate because the plastic fairings are worth more than the bike
no originality- they look the same no matter how much you modify them...
Enjoy your new wheels, brother. It is a different ride with different joys and different reasons for doing it.

2002 Bandit 1200/ GSXR cams/ 1277 BB Kit/ Holeshot header and can/ 38mm flatslides/ a good head/lotsa hp/lotsa tq- lots of rear tires...

Agree as well. I had stock pipes and pulled the snorkle. Stuck it back in soon as I could get back in the garage. Too lean.

am I alone or does that make little or no sense? If I read that right Melvin is running at full choke all the time. If I am wrong enlighten me.

no it's not running at full choke wot i did was plug the tube left by the snorkel and the popping has been reduced the hose is now conected to a K&N filter the bike picks up quicker than before and has less popping or backfire from the motor as i throttle down i'll post a pic of the bike with the new pipes and filter fitted ok

Maybe I'm a dumbazz but Melvin's photo labeled snorkle_contected looks a lot more like a crankcase breather than the snorkle that came off my airbox.

Look under your seat. It's the ribbed rubber tube that feeds the air box. It's very restrictive and pops out easily. Just give it a tug and then grab the throttle

You might need to turn out your airmixture screws a bit.
