Yes, the rack is removable, and Triumph does sell the sissy bar by itself. The trouble with buying the luggage rack later on is that they only sell it with the support arms...which the sissy bar comes with. So you'd end up with two sets of support arms if you go with your plan. Seeing how Triumph wants $200 for the rack with support arms, I think it's worth it to buy the whole package at the same time which is about $50 or so cheaper. Fortunately I got lucky and grabbed a used rack off of another member for $100. I didn't realize when I bought my sissy bar that I'd need the rack if I wanted to mount a large tail bag.
